Primera Fajita had the best record and the best credentials coming into the Grade III DED Princess and came away with a huge payday after a docile win, scoring by two-lengths as the well-meant favourite in a field of eight juvenile fillies. A daughter of Eastern Precedent, who produced multiple Grade I winner Tight Pockets, who was only fourth in a pair of recent Grade I attempts but came through in this lower level event to notch her third career win while pushing her earnings close to $500.000 in the process.
With so many gray fillies in the Princess field, it was tough to tell who was actually going for the lead but Angry Curator (9.75) broke sharpest from post eight and took a brief early lead from Primera Fajita (*2.70), who took it to the field early as the favourite. Heading into the first turn, the two leaders assumed a clear lead over Gostly Graveyard (5.00) inside and Regal Portrait (5.10) three-wide and through the first split of 23.56, it also forced the hand of West Coast Cooler (5.75) who came between rivals. Angry Curator eventually took the lead once again around the bullring but the inside was always the place to be and Primera Fajita inched forward down the backstretch while West Coast Cooler tucked in nicely behind. The rail run got the favourite nearly a length in front through six-furlongs in 1:10.60 and as Angry Curator evened out, the backfield tried to make a run with under two-furlongs to travel. But by the time the field hit the head of the short stretch, Primera Fajita was long gone and in the end, she cruised under the line to a docile two-length win over West Coast Cooler, with Angry Curator just holding onto third over Regal Portrait. Call Of Faith (10.50) was absolutely nowhere early and salvaged fifth, Gostly Graveyard and Livin On The Edge (4.50) had nothing and Eastern Philosophy (17.55) tanked as the longest shot in her two-turn debut.
Primera Fajita was one spot from earning her way into the Grade I BC Juvenile Fillies but can take solace in the fact that her prep race in the Albiciades produced not only the winner of that race but also the top two finishers in the LA Jewel and the top two finishers here in the DED Princess, with hers being the most impressive. The best part is that she was able to relax a bit in the middle stages and come on again around the turn; factors that cannot be overlooked when looking into her first start as a three-year-old in a few weeks.
Congratulations goes out to owner EasyMoney Stables and their two-year-old filly Primera Fajita, a going-away winner of the Grade III DED Princess!
