Welcome to Baltimore! The second weekend of the TC series brings us to PIM where we will have a ton of stakes-action over the course of two action-packed days. Friday’s card includes the 17th running of the $150.000 G3 Miss PS for sophomore filly sprinters going six-furlongs over the main strip. D J C Racing Stables (2016, 2021) and E. Camacho (2012, 2014) have taken two of these to lead the trainer and jockey standings, respectively.
Unlike Saturday’s main event where we will see plenty of familiar faces from a fortnight ago, the G3 Miss PS drew a field of seven fillies that will all be racing with at least three weeks between their last efforts and Friday. The field is an interesting mix as we have a maiden, stakes winners, graded competitors, and two fillies on three-race winning streaks; however, all seven will carry the same 122-pound impost. Let’s have a look and see how the field stacks up for Friday’s G3 Miss PS:
#1 Woketard (TwinTowersRacing/D. Davis): At least the maiden won the draw for this. She’s 0-7 with just a single ITM finish, but that did come in her last race. Unfortunately, there’s a big gap (even at HRP) between one-mile grass MSWs and G3 6-furlong sprints on the main track. Pass.
#2 Peace At Dawn (Smokey Stover/V.R. Carrasco): Bought for $150.000 back in February, lass has made two allowance starts since, and she enters following a win for the new barn. Makes the logical jump to stakes company here and you have to like her early foot from this post. Gets tested for class, but looks like she’ll challenge anyone willing to go with her early.
#3 Texas Holdem (D J C Racing Stables/J.C. Ferrer): Homebred comes out of a G1 where she was 3rd and cuts back to a sprint distance that may suit her a bit better. Drawn well for this assignment and she has tools that can help her here as she has flashed sprinter speed and also closed effectively. Nothing wrong with options and she seems a good bet to finish ITM.
#4 Paris Pinnacle Party (Mb Stables/L. Saez): Big barn’s only entrant has seen her share of graded fields as she’s run in more graded races than the rest combined, enters as the only graded-winner in this group, and she’s a MGSW. Returns to the distance of her G2 score back in August and she figures to be the horse to beat in this one.
#5 Queen Mother (Wood Duck Stables/M. Franco): Lass has feasted on CA-bred foes in three consecutive wins leading up to this and appears primed for the biggest test of her career. She’s fast enough that she doesn’t have to concede the lead to anyone in here and has shown an ability to sit behind a target and pounce at the right time. The 1:10 and 2 work from March is a standout and she is the top selection.
#6 Grand General (Simmer Down Stable/J. Pimentel): Lass doesn’t spend much time in the barn as she will be making the 14th start of her career. Been ITM in 11 of those prior efforts and is a multiple stakes-winner. Faces graded foes for the first time here, but she has a knack for being where she needs to be when the money is on the line. Doesn’t possess overpowering speed, so she’ll have to work out a trip, but she’s not hopeless.
#7 Genghis Happened (Arindel/J.R. Velazquez): Our outside filly is another that is riding a three-race winning streak. Conditioner put her in for a $25 tag and that seems to have been the confidence booster she needed, taking an allowance and listed stake after going unclaimed in that seasonal bow. She likes to win and she’s done it in a multitude of ways. Be a fun horse to own and feels like she’s right in the mix.
Final Analysis: 5-1-4-7 is how we see it shaking out, but those aren’t the only ones that can win this. Good luck to all of the participants in the G3 Miss PS at Pimlico!
