BC Juvenile Fillies – Grade I [KYO]
1 1/16 Mile Dirt Stake Purse $2,000.000 Filly 2 Year Olds.
1st Rabbit Bay Smokey Stover Bocachica A
As the race split into its four divisions this one did no work to sit nicely in the second row tracking the leaders and going easily. At about half way she pushed off the rail using her 16 hands to force the three horses outside her wider still but after a while switched back to force her way between the leading pair. Enjoying the clear air she pushed into the lead and held it readily to the line winning by a length in the end.
I said she would have to find some improvement to win this and she found that in the perfect run and gaps that came at the right time today. You only have to compare her run in the Alcibiades last time over the same course and distance to appreciate the importance of a good trip and these big races are very often down to a few good breaks at the right time.
Bred by the trainer she is by Acapulco Bay who never lived up to his beautiful bloodlines on the track but is clearly pretty good at passing them on. Her dam is Rabbit For A Cause who was a real early type who barely lasted to this race when she was racing and certainly seems to have passed that precocious nature on to her daughter.
Congratulations to the winning owner
2nd Calm Fury Mb Stables Cedillo A
Broke into the third of the four rows but was shuffled back around half way and that put paid to her winning chances. When she finally found a wide run she ran on very willingly to be a fine second. She beat the winner last time out but that day she broke into the stalk and today she was too far back early and then had a tough run.
Bred by the trainer she is by Fire N Fury whose dam is the same as Rabbit Bay’s in Distant Cousin, a brilliant race mare who has given Mb Stables a lovely sire who is really turning them out. Her Dam is Zen Destiny who was bought from Smokey Stover and also has some close ties to the winners pedigree. I am sure we will see these two lovely fillies go at it for a long time and at only 15.1hh this one looks to have to most improvement in her.
3rd Scarlett Dream Arindel Saez L
She won the Alcibiades making the first three home here the same as the first four in that race just in completely the opposite order. It looked like this filly had found the perfect spot alongside Rabbit Bay in the second group but as Rabbit Bay began making her own space off the rail she suffered a little and was pushed wide round the home turn. She kept on really strongly but the winner had won the race by the time she got balanced and started running again. She may have lost today but i feel she may end up being the best of them on the balance of form and i suspect we will see this finishing order flipped a few more times in the future.
Out of Tallmadge and bred by Canny Lodge she is out of a Dial It In filly who never made it as a racehorse.
4th Gumption Alydar Stables Velazquez J R
Another that broke into the third row she had an interesting run and i must admit i thought for a while she was going to come up the rail and win. She was well ridden, moving around a few before switching to the rail when everything else was fanning out to make their runs. In the end she just ran out of puff in the stretch and couldn’t go through with her challenge but i feel this was a run full of merit and she looks to have a bright future.
5th Cold Storage Rock Creek Jaramillo E
Four got spinny legs at the start and this was one of them so she did really well in the end to up fifth after finding some running room and staying on really well.
6th Syclone Fractious Hernandez R M
Another that got the spinny leg start she too was in the last group and ran a very similar race to Cold Storage which was full of merit considering the start handicap.
7th Lucky Star Calia Stable Castellano J J
Broke fast and made the running with Doctor Quinn. She stuck it out best and was pretty brave to be 7th.
8th Nebulistic Barcelona Farms Van Dyke D
Started into group three but was pushed up wide to get into the race after a half mile. She still looked dangerous down the back but as the winner flipped off the rail coming into the turn she suffered and was forced even wider. In truth she would have to have been a wonder horse after this terrible trip and i reckon if she ever gets a decent draw she may be a superstar.
9th Indien Rouge Mb Stables Franco M
Broke into the stalking group but was widest of the four and suffered along with Nebulistic when the winner moved out. She understandably tired at the end.
10th Apache Farm El Primero Rodeo Elliott S
Got the spinny legs start and never recovered.
11th Proud Spell Fractious Centeno D E
The fourth of the spinny legged slow starters she too never recovered.
12th Doctor Quinn Mb Stables Lopez P
Sent to the front it what looked like a planned tactic as each of the stable runners were placed into three different positions in the race. In the end she weakened pretty badly.
13th Ignore Tucker Fractious Gaffalione T
Started in the third group and then fell back to the rear by halfway, a head scratching run here as she was never a factor.
14th Sioux Gathering Rock Creek Jimenez A
Broke into the stalking group but did very little after that, a little wide and beaten only six lengths in the premier two year old fillies race wasn’t as bad as her finishing position makes it look.
