Recent Maiden Winner Adds DeMille Stakes in First Attempt

I don’t know how many times this season we have seen maiden winners make the big step up in class and walk away with a Graded title. So was the case for Bombay Diplomat ( High Voltage ) who added his first ever Graded title in a final time of 1:33.47, and he has extended his juvenile record to 5 ( 2-3-0 ).

  • Seabiscuit Handicap ( Gr. II ) Purse $200.000
  • Del Mar Race Track- For Three years old and Up
  • One Mile and a sixteenth – Turf Course

While runners like Sweetness and Laffin Jamie were unable to add another Graded title here at DMR yesterday for their trainer, Bombay Diplomat walked away with the Gr. III DeMille Stakes by just a nose, earning his second season trainer his thirdgraded title. His first to last effort in this event will most definitely stick in the minds of many of the handicappers here, he most definitely looks like he will be in the hunt for the BC Turf title next season if all goes to plan. For his trainer High Voltage, his Graded record this season is 21 starts ( 3-2-5 ), quite impressive for someone who has just 403 starts in his career, and he is coming close to ending his second season. Could very well be the next up and coming superstar of the game.

Placing second by just one one hundreds of a second would be Trouble Brewing ( Mb Stables ) who was also keen to win this event with his late push to the wire, but was just slightly out in the photo to achieve that goal. Jockey Maldonado has definitely found how to look deep down into this juvenile and bring out his best efforts. Knowing his trainer, we may see more of this combination in the future.

Let go at some 29-1 odds come post time, Night Rider Stables Crescent All Age gave his show backers something to cheer about at race end. While this affair was only his second time in his career to tackle a route event, his upfront running style seems to fade later in the lane. May only be an issue on the grass as it seems to tire him, and possibly a switch back to the dirt will allow him to challenge late.

Fourth on back in this affair would be Heavily Redacted ( Aer Stables ) who after two back to back wins, would just remain a length shy in his first ever Graded event. Fifth was BC Juvenile Turf Sprint runner-up Dawning Drei ( Oquinn Farm ), who the betting public made the post time favorite. Not really sure what happened in this event, other then possibly the switch to the dirt footing in his last two works threw off his game and running style. Sixth and seventh were Captain Cajones ( Mo Mentum Farm ) and Highland Ruckus ( Rock Creek ). I would like to see Captain Cajones get back to the main track as he did in his opener when he went gate to wire winning by five lengths against a field of nine. As for Highland Ruckus, he needs to take a step down to a level he is more comfortable with to find the top.
