First Lady (Grade 1) (BC)- $350.000 Purse
KEE- For Fillies and Mares Three Years Old and Upward
One Mile on the Turf
October 3, 2020
History was made in the First Lady on Saturday as La Terrifiant was re-elected as the race’s winner, becoming the first ever horse to win this race two years in a row. Last year, she won the BC Fillies and Mares Turf a month after winning this race, so trainer Our Athletes will be hoping that history repeats itself. This is one of the favorite tracks of this trainer, so I am sure these wins are particularly meaningful, and especially to do so with your stable star, La Terrifiant. Even more interestingly, she won the race in the exact same time (1:33.26) that she won it in last year. Second place (Zee Model) was closer to her this time, but this incredibly filly would get the job done. These wins represent Our Athletes’ two wins in the race as a whole, and that is also true for jockey A Beschizza, who rode her each time. That race time is tied for second in the history of the race, just slightly behind the record in 2012. Let’s take a look at this!
(¼ Mile- :22.93)- La Terrifiant does start well from her #11 post, but it is the two that started on each side of her, Diva Delite, from D J C Racing Stables, and Allinthegate’s Luxury Class that have the lead early on. La Terrifiant remains between them after a quarter mile, and is within the leaders. These three take the long way around the opening turn, since Autumn Beauty, from Smokey Stover, also started well enough to keep them from moving to the rail, though I am not sure what prevented Autumn Beauty from simply doing this. Fellow beauty, Nakamura Stables’ Charming Beauty, as well as Unsuspecting, out of Mb Stables, were next in line but more than a length back so Autumn Beauty could have crossed over eventually. In the pack, Zee Model (Gdp Inc), Win Silly (Team 7 Illusions), and post-time favorite Rules Are Madness (Angelos Stable) are running three wide with Hash Tag Hash (Estero Farms) nearby. Freaking Me Out (Mb Stables) and Angel Shark (John Henry) are the trailers.
(½ Mile- :45.91)- Once they hit the top of the backstretch, Autumn Beauty finally elects to move over to the rail, and the front three are grateful for this chance to now finally move over themselves. Luxury Class holds the lead by about a full length with La Terrifiant running to her outside, even for the second position with Diva Delite, who was on the rail. Behind them, Unsuspecting found herself just off the lead between the two Beauty’s, Autumn and Charming. No changes further back as the threesome of Zee Model, Win Silly, and Rules Are Madness are four lengths back, with another length and a half to Hash Tag Hash, Freaking Me Out, and Angel Shark.
(Top Of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- Beginning at the top of the turn, La Terrifiant began to turn it on, knowing the way around this track and how to get it done in this race. She would push ahead of both Luxury Class and Diva Delite within the turn, and as they reached the top of the stretch, she had put those two to bed. Behind her, Unsuspecting made the smart move to leave the Beauties behind and try to follow La Terrifiant. Meanwhile, on the rail a nice opening had presented itself for Zee Model, and she was coming on quickly. By this point, she was about to pull even with the likes of Diva Delite, and had two lengths to make up on La Terrifiant. On the outside, Rules Are Madness was looking to make a move, and Angel Shark was now looking to maneuver traffic through the inside.
(Finish- 1:33.26)- In the stretch, La Terrifiant looked dominant momentarily, showing what a true great racehorse that she is. However, with less than a furlong to go, Zee Model was coming on stronger than it seemed like she might, and the bid of Angel Shark, who did well with the traffic and was now on the outside was also strong. Perhaps, La Terrifiant began getting a little fatigued as well (remember she had a wide trip in the first turn), but she still had plenty of heart to survive at the wire over Zee Model and Angel Shark. Those two should also be happy with their stretch efforts. Fourth ends up a dead head between Rules Are Madness and Hash Tag Hash, but neither of them threatened for more than that position. Unsuspecting was beaten a head by them in sixth. Following them, it is Charming Beauty, Freaking Me Out, Win Silly, Diva Delite, Luxury Class, and Autumn Beauty.
About The Winner- La Terrifiant, trained by Our Athletes and ridden by A Beschizza, is a five year old mare by Pinkman, and is out of Cest Creepy. She was bred in California by Four Winds Racing as a second quarter two year old and acquired by Our Athletes, via Jive Inc, for $375.000 in private sales in April 2018. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her 11th in 30 starts, her tenth graded win, and her seventh Grade 1 win. Her career earnings are now $5,017.000.
