For Fillies And Mares Three Years Old And Upward
July 1, 2023
These ladies are all routing veterans. You could make a case for almost every filly and mare in the field. My eye is on Sin City Girlz. In a world where dead heats are almost the rule of the day, she opens up daylight when she wins. We’ll see if she can do the same against these.
Here’s the field:
1 Loihi (Martyparty)
Won the Santa Barbara Stakes at 1 ½ mile two starts back, so distance and class is not a problem for this five-year-old mare. Tried to step up to Grade 1 last out but finished off the board. She should like this spot much better.
2 Jackie Trip (Gdp Inc)
Always a bridesmaid, never a bride. At least that’s how it’s seemed this year for this lady. Three starts, three second place finishes, including two ungraded stakes. Could this be the one that gets her back to the winner’s circle?
3 Catawba (Sccj Stables)
Last win came at allowance level in December. Since then, she’s tried graded twice with her best performance coming in her last start in the Wilshire (Grade 3) where she finished third. Will take a big effort to win against these.
4 Build Battle (Mb Stables)
Won the Sheepshead Bay (Grade 2) two starts back at the same distance as this race, so she is good for the distance and the class. Faltered in her last start when she tried to step up to Grade 1. Should like this spot better, and a win wouldn’t be a surprise.
5 Villeneuve (Mo Mentum Farm)
Last win came in allowance company in March, but she has had a very successful 2023 so far with just one finish off the board in five starts. Second in the Grade 1 Gamely last out. Should have a say in the outcome.
6 Sin City Girlz (Czech Out Farms)
She doesn’t always win, but when she does, she wins by daylight. Last out she won an allowance at GG by six lengths. Four wins in five starts this year by a total of 17 lengths. Look for her up front early and she very well could still be there at the wire.
Picks: 6-4
