Ricki Tikki Tavi, racing in the silks of La Canada Racehorses, made it three of four stakes overall, and two of three at the G3 level, on Tuesday when he took down the $300.000 G3 Jones Stakes at PRX.
Racing in the two-path while third, Ricki Tikki Tavi was in a good rhythm while Contradiction took the field through the opening quarter-mile in :23.72. Fairly Lucky hugged the rail in 2nd about two lengths off the Aer Stables runner up top and 3/4 of a length infront of the eventual winner. Oleg and Noble Decision were at the back of the five-horse field about a length behind Ricki Tikki Tavi.
When they reached the half mile in :47.01, Contradiction was still enjoying things up front, but Noble Decision had gone around Fairly Lucky and Ricki Tikki Tavi and was now in 2nd just off the leader’s flank. Ricki Tikki Tavi had his neck in front of Fairly Lucky and Oleg remained at the back of the compact field.
Entering the far turn, Contradiction had put daylight between himself and Noble Decision as the latter moved down to the rail and by the time he reached three-quarters in 1:10.40, the former enjoyed a three length lead on Ricki Tikki Tavi. The La Canada Racehorses-runner was just starting to make his move from the three path as Fairly Lucky found a seam between that runner and a fading Noble Decision; Oleg was still at the back and more than five lengths off of the pace.
At the top of the lane, Contradiction was still running strongly, but Ricki Tikki Tavi was methodically edging closer and he posed the greatest threat to the front-runner. Fairly Lucky wasn’t closing fast enough to trouble the top two and was in line for a battle to save the show from Oleg. By the time they reached the 1/16 pole, Contradiction was desperate as Ricki Tikki Tavi moved to within a length. Ricki Tikki Tavi kept grinding away and finally reached the front in the shadow of the wire and secured a neck victory over the tough-luck Contradiction in a time of 1:41.29. Fairly Lucky kept a length advantage on Oleg to the wire and secured the show for Mb Stables.
Ricki Tikki Tavi (Bright Command o/o Perfect Tip Toer) now has $635.600 in earnings with a career record of 15-6-1-2; he also secured four BC points to increase his total to 13, good enough to rank 16th on the BC Classic leaderboard and 12th in the BC Dirt Mile standings. Contradiction received two BC points and Fairly Lucky was rewarded the final point available.
