The Palm Beach Stakes-Grade III
GP Race 3 1 1/16M Turf
Purse $100.000 For
Three Year Olds
1st Rifleman, trained by EasyMoney Stables
Dropped back after the start and was able to get to the rail before entering the first turn. Raced off the rail down the backstretch 6 lengths off the pace being set by Lone Shadow. Started his move as they went around the far turn and moved to the middle of the track. Rallied down the stretch and was able to get up by a measured half length.
2nd Throne Drone, trained by Aer Stables
Broke well and stayed in his lane 2 lengths off an honest pace being sat by Lone Shadow. Maintained his position all the way down the backstretch and began inching up on the leader as they moved around the turn. Made his way to the front at the top of the stretch but was unable to hold off Rifleman at the wire.
3rd Glacier Express, trained by Smokey Stover
Dropped back but was still caught 3 wide around the first turn. Remained in the 3 path down the backstretch 4 lengths off the pace. Tried to save ground around the far turn but had to move back outside to avoid traffic. Never threatened the top two but was able to win the show.
4th Lone Shadow, trained by Blushing Meadows
Broke on top and got to the rail before entering the turn. Raced with a clear two length lead down the backstretch while setting a respectable pace. Started to cede ground to Throne Drone as they moved around the turn. Tired as they moved down the stretch by was able to hang on for a minor check.
Summary
This was a very impressive performance by Rifleman who was able to over come the far outside post and an extra two pounds. He made up a lot of ground in a race where the fractions were not exceptionally fast and should be a force in the 3 YO turf races this year. Throne Drone ran a very nice race putting to rest fears that his best days were behind him. Calm Havoc and Running Your Mouth had disappointing outings and will look to give a much better account of themselves next time out.
