The Jaipur (Grade 1) (BC)- $400.000 Purse
BEL- For Three Year Olds and Upward
Six Furlongs on the Turf
June 11, 2022
Roman Rage is certainly no stranger to the race track, as he would be making the 58th start of his career in the Grade 1 Jaipur, and recently he has shown the trend of being the type of horse that shows up when the races are the biggest. Running in this race on BEL day would certainly qualify as being that type of race, and the eight year old gelding would, once again, run his best and this time it results in a victory. We had him as one of our picks in the preview, and the bigger surprise would actually be the horses that didn’t show up today. Roman Rage is trained by Gdp Inc, who claimed the horse for $20.000 over four years ago and hasn’t looked back! It is his first win in the Jaipur, and that is also true for jockey M Franco. Congratulations to them! The time of victory was 1:08.11, which is right in line with other recent winning times. Let’s take a look!
(1/4 Mile- :22.60)- From his outside post, Cherokee Devil jumps out to the lead for Maxmillion Farm, and he’ll have Avenue Z’s Sniper running within a half length to his inside. These two are able to move over to the rail by the end of the backstretch. Behind them, four stalkers are lined up pretty neatly across the track, and there is nothing between them at this point. From inside to outside, we start with our eventual winner, Gdp Inc’s Roman Rage, and then Insist Always (Mb Stables), Caught Up In You (TwinTowersRacing), and Settle The Score Vr (John Henry). It would just so have it that these first six horses early on would end up in one of the top six spots. Behind them came Shakespearean (Mb Stables), with one of the three olds, Hopewell Artist (Smokey Stover) nearby. Then it’s Owl Cat (Rock Creek), last year’s winner, Kid Commander (Allinthegate), the other three year old, Distant Volcano (Team 7 Illusions), and lastly Rising King (Maxmillion Farm).
(Top of Stretch, 1.7F To Go)- Around the long turn, Cherokee Devil and Sniper hold the top two spots still, and it will be Sniper by a head entering the top of the stretch. The four stalkers right behind them are still in those spots, and enough of an opening appears for Roman Rage on the rail, and the 58-race veteran knows what to do with that. Insist Always was right beside him, and would have no problem staying his own lane and running between the two front runners. Settle The Score Vr was running well on the outside as Caught Up In You tried to keep up. Hopewell Artist and Shakespearean were close enough to make a run but needed to start that now! Everyone else would have a massive task at this point if they wanted the win.
(Finish- 1:08.11)- Sniper tries to hold on in the stretch, but was interesting to see Insist Always pass Roman Rage and look like he might be pulling away from that one. But once Roman Rage got by Sniper for good, he was ready to shoot down Insist Always as well, and would find the run needed to get back around that one and score the victory in a photo finish. Insist Always did well in a second place effort, and on the outside, third place Settle The Score Vr had a shot late. Sniper takes fourth over Caught Up In You, and Cherokee Devil slips to sixth. The second half of the field will go down as Kid Commander, Owl Cat, Distant Volcano, Hopewell Artist, Shakespearean, and Rising King.
About the Winner- Roman Rage, trained by Gdp Inc., and ridden to victory by M Franco is an eight year old gelding by the late Viking Zippy and is out of the late Openly Vain. He was bred in the great breeding state of Pennsylvania by Gdp Inc. as a first quarter two year old, but he’s passed through a couple other barns, too. Gdp Inc. reacquired the horse in May 2018 with a $20.000 claim from RNP Stables. Congratulations to the connections! The win is his 18th in 58 starts, his fourth stake win and second graded win. His career earnings are now $1,563.310.
