5 KEE Lexington (GII) [KYD]
$400.000 3yo 11/16th Mile Dirt 120lbs
Perhaps this race played its part… let’s face it, beside the nice payday, the KYD points were very, very, very important, and now that Royalty Stables and Salah have walked away with both, well… let’s just say, mission accomplished. Was Saturday’s Lexington (GII) close?? How about seventh beaten a length… so, at least the made it interesting for all involved. When the dust settled on the main oval at KEE, Salah was a head in front and nailed down a bunch of good stuff. The final running time was 1:41.60 for the mile and a sixteenth, and the track was Fast. Congrats to the connections, and now we wait to see what plays out between now and the first Saturday in May.
Not to be lost in the hoopla, Grimley’s Fighter Ship closed from far back to just miss yet moved up to twenty-sixth on the KYD list… so unless the Big Barn has a massive sale, it looks like he should make it into the starting gate for the KYD. Not bad for a horse with only five starts and two stakes starts.
It was a neck back to Loyalist, from the Mb Stables barn, and the third place finisher gives the outfit yet another horse in the top 40… it was another nose to Declaration in fourth, and the same to Fire Teeth in fifth… both of those from the Team 7 Illusions barn… Declaration stands at 33rd, so the wait-and-see timer starts for that one. Eleven lengths covered the field of twelve, and we had two scratches as Maymun and Mooresy stayed in the barn.
