Senorita Stakes As A Wide Open Feel To It

Senorita Stakes (Grade 3)- $100.000 Purse
SA- For Fillies Three Years Old
Six and a Half Furlongs on the Turf
April 27, 2025

Sunday’s card at SA will feature the 22nd running of the Senorita Stakes, a turf sprint for three year old fillies. The race has always been a Grade 3 while running for $100.000, and was moved from HOL to SA in 2014. Last year’s race was won by Rudimental, for Fractious. The filly is still active, but no longer racing at the stake level. The Sidley Stud recently claimed her for $15.000. Six have been entered for this race, so let’s meet them now!

1- Osage (Sccj Stables, ridden by V Espinoza)- The trainer was able to get this filly in the Smokey Stover dispersal sale, and at the time she had three wins in four starts. Naturally promising for her three year old season, Osage has made two ungraded stake starts with Sccj Stables, and while she did not win either, she put in a good effort in both of them.

2- Amazing Nation (Asgar, ridden by D Van Dyke)- This will be her sixth career start, and the first time that she runs on the grass. She had looked good against NM-breds earlier in her career, but has been here at SA for her last two, each graded races at over a mile, and while she wasn’t terrible, she was mediocre. You can see why the trainer is changing things up here, and her works are as good as anyone else here.

3- Eighteen Ninety Two (Mo Mentum Farm, ridden by Mario Gutierrez)- No one has earned more than Eighteen Ninety Two, as she is just a tick above $200.000 thus far in her nine starts. Three of them have been wins, including her last start, which was the $100.000 China Doll right here where she beat Osage along the way. Had a nice work here earlier in the month at six furlongs, and gets my nod here.

4- Queen Kingdom (Aer Stables, ridden by M E Smith)- Off to a great start for her career, with three wins in five starts. The stakes aren’t terribly high in those wins, and just two back, she won by four lengths at BTP. She was upgraded in her competition level after that, but tired late in the $100.000 Lacombe Memorial at FG. She’ll cut her distance here in hopes of finishing strong all the way to the wire.

5- Funny Girl (LionKing Stables, ridden by F T Alvarado)- Picked up by the trainer for $40.000 in October after a good start to her career with Iolaus Racing. LionKing Stables looked to move her in the stakes ranks, and for a while that went well. However, after a couple of disappointing runs in KYO preps, the trainer looked to change things up and moved her to the turf. She would win that race, and optional claimer here last month with Alvarado aboard, and now we’ll see if they can do the same back in a stake.

6- Just Average (Mb Stables, ridden by E Maldonado)- Don’t let her name deceive you, because Just Average is certainly well above average. She’s lightly raced to this point, with four starts to her name, and in that, she has one win and a pair of seconds. Last time out, she just missed by a neck at wire in the $115.000 Melody Of Colors at GP. Prior to that, she ran here in the $100.000 Sweet Life Stakes, a race with identical conditions, though ungraded, and was third.

Prediction: 3-6-1-2
