The Silks Run may have only had a $100.000 purse associated with it, but it attracted a pretty good field of horses looking to make the most of this opportunity. It would be won by a 10/1 longshot named Shakespearean, for Mb Stables, who won a very similar stake up at TAM last month. The four year old gelding by Coin Flip has now hit the board in all ten of his career starts, and this is his fourth win! He is trained by Mb Stables, and it is the first time that the trainer has won this race, and that’s true for the jockey, L Saez, as well. Congratulations! The winning time of :56.26 is a new stake record! Let’s take a look!

(¼ Mile- :22.22)- Four horses vie for the early lead, and none of them are willing to give in to the other as they make their way down the backstretch. Into the turn, they are still four wide across the track. Lucinda, running in the fourth lane for Alydar Stables, has a neck in front of the other three. Affirmed Authority is second while on the rail for Asgar, and running between them are Gdp Inc’s Roman Rage and Avenue Z’s Wine Critic. Stalking them are three more, with the eventual winner from Mb Stables, Shakespearean, being part of this group and running in the third lane, about a half length behind the other two. Doom (Rampage Stable) was on the rail here, and the post-time favorite, Kathmandu, was in between them for Angelos Stable. Mystery, from Fractious, ran at the back.

(Top Of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- They would move around the turn and enter the stretch with the same group of four leading the way. Lucinda still continued to be a little better than Affirmed Authority, Roman Rage, and Wine Critic for the time being. The bigger concern here was going to be Shakespearean who swung out wide on exit of the turn as obviously, he had no other choice. He’d now be five wide, and needing to make up a very doable length and a half. Meanwhile, Doom had room on the rail if he wanted it. Mystery was getting into the mix as well, but potentially would have more difficulty with traffic in the stretch.

(Finish- :56.26)- A good stretch battle would take place as Shakespearean pulled even with the front four, but Lucinda was not going to go away quietly. Meanwhile, more of a gap opened up in the middle of the field for Mystery to come on through, and he would make a good run for it, as well. On the far outside, however, it would be Shakespearean, winning the battle with Lucinda, who was running right beside him, and probably not even noticing Mystery’s move until the final moments. Shakespearean would hold that one off as well, grabbing the victory! Mystery gets second over Lucinda, while Affirmed Authority beats Roman Rage for fourth. Doom, Kathmandu, and Wine Critic round it out.

About The Winner- Shakespearean, trained by Mb Stables and ridden to victory by L Saez, is a four year old gelding by Coin Flip and is out of the late Quite Elusive. He was bred in California as a third quarter two year old by his trainer, and they have been together throughout. Congratulations to the connections! The win is his fourth in ten starts, and his first stake win. His career earnings are now $367.080.
