After a two year absence from competition, the $100.000 Singletary Stakes makes its return to Santa Anita Park on Sunday. Back in 2016, Aggravation ( Mb Stables ) won the event that year, and then went on to capture three Graded company affairs, and some $900.000 in career earnings before retiring.
- Singletary Stakes – Purse$100.000
- Santa Anita Park – For Three year olds
- One mile on the turf
- April 28th, 2019
Returning to the SA turf course, the Singletary Stakes test three year olds and there ability to negotiate two turns over this seven furlong course. Returning this season to defend a three year old title will be Mb Stables and his entry of Just You Wait with rider Mario Gutierrez in the irons. The grey colt has two victories in eight career starts. His most recent came two starts ago when he captured an Alw14.5 race going todays distance at TUP. His only stakes test was back last season in the Gr.III Bourbon Stakes, which he placed ninth behind two of his stablemates. Hoping the return to the turf after his last dirt try was unsuccess will spring life back to the front. He will dawn the number four silks.
Another interesting entry is that of Serpico ( TwinTowersRacing ) who has landed the services of jockey J Talamo. Has visited the winners circle three of his last five starts on the grass, his most recent coming here two starts ago in a Clm32 race, with a sub 1:34 time. Stepped up last time out to compete in the $125 Cutler Bay over Gulfstream’s inner turf course where he made a bold charge late to miss by a quarter of a length. Earned a 92 SRF figure for his efforts, and should be made post time favorite on Sunday. She takes on the number two post position.
From the rail will be lightly raced Spanish Knowledge ( Nakamura Stables ) who has just four career starts. Broke his maiden in just his second asking after being dealt a sloppy MNR course for his opener of his career. Since the victory, has yet to place in the top three in his two most recent attempts. Interesting to note is that his last effort came on the turf going a mile at Tampa in the $75 Columbia, and while he showed some speed in the middle going of that event, missed by a length finishing sixth. Trainer liked what he saw, that’s why the return to the turf once again.
The final runner from post three will be Clutch ( Aer Stables ) who has been concentrating his efforts on the turf, and in a big way. After a runner-up in the Zuma Beach as a juvenile, he would step right up to the Gr. I BC Juvenile Turf, placing ninth. This season he opened up capturing an Alw51 affair going an eighth of a mile longer over this oval, then returned to compete in the Gr. III Palm Beach Stakes. Placing eighth in that event was a disappointment, so he is coming back to a track that he seems to love. Level and surface should pay dividends once again.
