Siouxbiscuit Prevails in a Photo Finish in Dogwood

Dogwood (Grade 3)- $300.000 Purse
CD- For Fillies Three Years Old
Seven Furlongs on the Dirt
September 23, 2023

Over the course of her three-year-old campaign, Siouxbiscuit has been highly productive, but a series of close calls at the wire has likely left Mb Stables thinking that the filly could have done so much more. She’s been a little snake-bit, and her last race where she missed the head bob at the wire in the Grade 1 Test is a good example of that. In the Grade 3 Dogwood, she would again be in a photo finish for the win, but this time, she would have the edge to get the win! This result gives Mb Stables his second win in the race, as he also won in 2021 with Story To Tell. F Prat had the winning ride, this first in the Dogwood. Congratulations to them! Siouxbiscuit was our second choice in the preview, but still went off a three-year-old. The time of the win was 1:21.73, beating the old stake record by a nose! Here’s a look at it!

(1/4 Mile- :22.72)- Alice Springs is the most ambitious out of the starting gate, and the London Racing filly leads the way by a length over Liberty Lake, who’s in the silks of D J C Racing Stables. Another length behind her is where we find the rest of the back, and our pick to win, Riggins Racing- trained Up She Flew, who was a big favorite here, runs in the third position. Mo Mentum Farm’s Antares Mission runs to her outside, and within a length of them closer to the rail is where we find our eventual winner, Siouxbiscuit, for Mb Stables. Long Term Parking (TwinTowersRacing) is also part of the pack, and it’s another length to Smokin Cara (Alydar Stables).

(1/2 Mile- :46.11, Top of Stretch- 2F To Go)- Not much chance down the backstretch and moving into the turn as Alice Springs continues to show the way with only Liberty Lake being close to her. That one is moving to the outside of her at this point. This is not something that changes within the turn either, as Alice Springs continues to look good at the front. Midway in the pack, we could see some horses starting to show more interest, and Siouxbiscuit was one of them. There would be room for her to come between Up She Flew and Antares Mission, and that’s exactly what F Prat looked to do. This was certainly a concern to all those that put money on Up She Flew to win. Antares Mission was three-year-old a lot more interested now than Up She Flew was. At the back, Smokin Cara was inching closer, and in front of her, she had what a closer loves to see, plenty of room to run while hugging the rail.

(Finish- 1:21.73)- In the stretch, Alice Springs looked to hang on, and she would be able to put Liberty Lake away. Challengers were coming, with Antares Mission and Siouxbiscuit looking like the biggest challengers while Smokin Cara was doing a great job in her bid to come from way back. Approaching the wire, Alice Springs ran out of energy, and the approach of the rest of the field was becoming much stronger. The outside horse, Antares Mission, was not able to maintain her push, making Siouxbiscuit looking the best of those that were making a move, but Smokin Cara was coming on hard. Just when it looked like Siouxbiscuit had it, Smokin Cara made a valiant push, and the photo finish sign was displayed. Even though Mb Stables probably thought his filly got there, that’s not a sign that he has enjoyed seeing with Siouxbiscuit. But this time, it would be his filly, beating Smokin Cara by a head to win the Dogwood! Alice Springs hangs on for third, and it’s a length and a half to the rest of the field. Antares Mission is fourth, topping the disappointing 1/2 favorite Up She Flew, Long Term Parking, and Liberty Lake.

About The Winner- Siouxbiscuit, trained by Mb Stables and ridden to victory by F Prat, is a three-year-old filly by Sioux, and is out of Creepy Party Girl. She was bred in Florida by El Primero Rodeo as a second quarter two-year-old, and was acquired by Mb Stables while she was still unraced for $45.000 in a April 2022 private sale. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her fourth in 12 starts, her third stake win and second graded win. Her career earnings are now $766.800.
