Simcoe Stakes
$200.000 6 1/2 Furlongs on Dirt for Two Year Olds Foaled in Canada
2016 Champ: Clockwork Chai
Six Canadian bred two year old colts and geldings will compete for the $200.000 purse. Any owner in this race would be thrilled if their horse can be even half the horse the 2016 winner, Clockwork Chai has turned into. As expected the field is pretty even so handicapping this one will be interesting.
1- Senator (Trained by Glorify Stables, Ridden by Garcia Alan)
One for one in his career and looking for his second win after his maiden breaking win at FE in July. His works are in the 1:11.2 range like the rest in the race. He picked up WO regular jockey Garcia Alan who has a 20% win rate with 2 year olds so far this year.
2- Black Mackee (Trained by John Henry, Ridden by Moran D)
One of only two to run in any sort of stake race so far in his career is Black Mackee. He finished fourth in the Clarendon in his most recent start. His trainer is looking for a better combination of adds as he has added blinkers and shadow roll to the bute he used last race in hopes of a better effort. The adds change is intriguing and with no works in the last month could mean they have a little something to hide and could be a good betting option in here.
3- Massachusetts (Trained by Mo Mentum Farm, Ridden by Da Silva E R)
It took four tries but was able to break his maiden in his most recent start. Three straight ON bred maidens finished off with a half length victory going seven furlongs. The six and a half furlong distance seems right up his alley. Like most in the race his works fall in the mid 1:11 range and looks ready to set up into ON bred stakes and if he runs his race should hit the board.
4- Bag Of Bones (Trained by Alberta Rose Stables, Ridden by Boulanger G)
Only one career start to his credit which was a win back at the end of June at FP where he was victorious. After that race he was sold by his former owners for $30.000. Since changing barns his works have shown some improvement and are similar to the rest of this field. He shows no works in the past month so hard to say if those improvements have continued.
5- Unsuited Invader (Trained by Hawaiian Shirt Guy, Ridden by Wilson E J)
The only horse in the race still a maiden. He has struggled to break that maiden, his most recent effort was a fifth place finish in a $47.500 maiden claimer here at WO. His works are in line with all the others in the race but his biggest draw back is he hasn’t been able to put it all together and turn it into a victory as of yet and likely wont find it any easier stepping up in competition.
6- Catch Fire (Trained by Sarah Stables, Ridden by Husbands P)
The only one in the field to compete in a graded stake race so far is Catch Fire. On that day the best he could do was a sixth place finish. He has also put in some impressive works, including a recent 1:10 on turf for six furlongs. This race isn’t on turf but none the less very impressive and indicates he is quickly improving. His best effort should top the rest of these in this field.
