Prince Of Wales Stakes ($400.000 Purse)
FE- For Three Year Olds Foaled In Canada
One Mile and Three Sixteenths on the Dirt
September 9, 2025
Let’s take a look ahead to Tuesday now as one of the biggest races out there for Canadian Breds, the Prince Of Wales Stakes, takes place at FE. This race offers a $400.000 purse to be split amongst its top finishers and runs for the 19th time. In 2024, Center Broadway got the win for Glorify Stables after running fourth in the Kings Plate a month prior. While he is still active and running at the stake level, he has not won since that race, though had a close call at PID last month. Six will run in this year’s race, including four that were in the Kings Plate. Here’s a look at those taking part:
1- Forever Martian (Mo Mentum Farm, ridden by R M Hernandez)- Ran third in the Kings Plate last month, coming from well off the pace in the process. That represented a tactical change for him, as he had been on the lead in his prior two races. Looking further back, he’s made late runs before, so it wasn’t totally unusual for him. In a smaller field, it will be interesting to see the tactic the trainer employs here.
2- Bad For Your Health (Mb Stables, ridden by M Franco)- Mb Stables has half of the entries in this race, so he is guaranteed some portion of this purse. Bad For Your Health has been successful at WO running against Canadian-Breds and will enter this race off a win in the $100.000 Elgin Stakes just two weeks ago. He’s been first or second in each of his last four races.
3- Happy Brave (The Sidley Stud, ridden by M Pinto)- Raced here last month, but didn’t accomplish much when he finished in a third-place dead heat in an $18.450 optional claimer. He’s been a lot better earlier in his career, especially last fall, and would be on the KYD trail this year. Showed little in those preps, but he can be counted on to work well. If that can be translated to the race, then he can run with these.
4- Mango Or Mint (The Sidley Stud, ridden by O Moreno)- After finishing second in the Plate Trial at WO, The Sidley Stud was hoping for better out of Mango Or Mint in the Kings Plate. The Ginger Haggis colt certainly wasn’t terrible in that but didn’t cash a check with this sixth-place performance. Neither of his wins to this point are in the stakes that he has attempted.
5- Conscientious (Mb Stables, ridden by J R Velazquez)- At one point in the Kings Plate, Conscientious was twelve lengths behind the leader, but came charging hard to end up second in the race. That makes him the top performer out of any of the horses from there that have made their way there. Since he was gelded in April, he’s won two out of four, grabbing a nice win in the $125.000 Queenston in June at WO.
6- Straight Cash Homie (Mb Stables, ridden by P Lopez)- When Conscientious was so far off the pace in the Kings Plate, the one that was leading the race was his stablemate, Straight Cash Homie. Now, they meet again, and it could be easy to assume that the trainer will look to employ the same tactical approach, but I’ve covered enough of these to know that will not necessarily be the case. Straight Cash Homie is usually on the lead, though, and did win the Plate Trial in July.
Prediction: 1-5-2-6
