The Monomoy Girl ($175.000 Purse)
CD- For Fillies Three Years Old
One Mile and One Sixteenth on the Dirt
June 15, 2024
We’ll get a field of five this Saturday for what is the third running of the ungraded Monomoy Girl, which sends three-year-old fillies a little over a mile on the main track. It’s part of a rather quiet Saturday in virtual racing but has seen a couple of successful winners in its other editions. The inaugural winner was Jinxed Artist, for Smokey Stover, in what was her first stake win of a career that would end up winning over $1,000.000 up to this point. Queen Evade Party won last year for Maxmillion Farm, for what was also her first stake win. She’s since become a graded winner and is still active right now. These five fillies would love to follow their lead. Let’s take a look at them:
1- Twerk Out (Witeout Stables, ridden by F Geroux)- Opened her career with back-to-back wins, but did not earn a penny for them. After her second win, Twerk Out moved into pay races and has not won one of them yet, but she did run second at a GP allowance in December. Only has made two starts as a three-year-old and was third of four here in an open allowance against older last time out.
2- Lonely Is The Night (Luz International, ridden by T Gaffalione)- In five starts, this Z Grayte One filly has two wins, with one coming in her last race: an N1X allowance down at LS. This is an improving horse, and over Memorial Day weekend, she put in a very good work at CD that showed what she is capable of. This is a great chance for her to show how much she is improving, and she may be one to watch over the long term even if this does not go according to plan. She is out of Give Her A Shot, and I am going to do exactly that. I like how she looks coming into this race and will make her my pick.
3- Sled (Sheffler Stables, ridden by J R Velazquez)- Spent her early days running for Fractious, and he entered her in some top races, including a pair of Grade 1’s. Those did prove to be way too much for her, at least at that point in time, and she would become more productive once backed off of them. Still, Fractious entered her in a couple of $32.000 claimers, with the latter seeing Sheffler Stables making the claim. Sled made her debut in Sheffler silks in the $100.000 Ruling Angel at WO and was a respectable fourth. I’m not wowed by a recent work, but there could be many reasons for that.
4- Beautiful Eileen (TwinTowersRacing, ridden by A Cedillo)- Broke her maiden in her fifth career start two months ago, with a wire to wire four length victory at SA. The weather did not cooperate for her first race against winners last month, and she fizzled out late to finish fourth, beaten by five lengths. By entering her here, we know that the trainer is not at all concerned with how that one panned out and is expecting an effort more like what was seen at SA. I’m not so sure, but she does work very well.
5- Jamaican Coffee (Night Rider Stables, ridden by A Beschizza)- She was strong very early in her career, running second in the $200.000 Seeking The Ante for NY-Breds in just her third start. As her two-year-old season went on, she continued to finish in the money against NY-Breds but did not get the same type of result when moved into unrestricted company. Finally, in her last start, she stepped up away from the Empire State, and won an optional claimer right here. Now, she’ll see if she can do that in an unrestricted stake again.
Prediction: 2-3-5-1
