With so many horses entering the Glen Cove on great form, it was a difficult race to predict. Just Average would be the large favorite due to running successfully in higher profile races, but no one in this field could be dismissed. Ultimately, it would be a TwinTowersRacing filly smokin’ the field and winning at 10/1. Smokin Cherie had won three straight, which were also her only turf starts to date. Now, she adds to that streak with her first stake win of any type. The win is the first in the race for TwinTowersRacing and jockey D Davis. The winning race time was 1:08.49, which is a new record for the stake. Let’s take a look at it now:

(1/4 Mile- :22.54)- Heading down the backstretch, four fillies look for the early advantage, but as we get closer to the quarter mile point, it will be Spb Racing’s Tried N True getting the upper hand by about a length while four wide. Very little separates the three to her inside, but it is Maxmillion Farm’s My Beautiful Ballon with a head in front of Xcel Racing’s Mollys Sweet Nectar and another Maxmillion Farm filly, Theatrical. Just off the lead, we have our eventual winner from TwinTowersRacing, Smokin Cherie, running side by side with Luz International’s Join Together. Behind them and running alongside one another are Just Average (Mb Stables), Wobble Stopper (First Flight Stable), and Matey (Red Fox Farms).

(½ Mile- :45.44, Top of Stretch, 1.7F To Go)- Tried and True holds on to the lead while moving around the turn, but My Beautiful Ballon gets closer to her entering the top of the stretch and seems poised to take the lead. Mollys Sweet Nectar and Theatrical remain in the mix up front for now. Meanwhile, Smokin Cherie starts to respond with more run midway through the turn but will have to swing to the outside in order to make a run at those in front of her. Join Together keeps pace with her and looks for room of her own. None of Wobble Stopper, Just Average, or Matey have begun to make a push as of yet.

(Finish- 1:08.49)- My Beautiful Ballon takes the lead early in the stretch, as Smokin Cherie makes progress while running five wide. Join Together has a big opening now to take advantage of. Fans waiting for the big post time favorite Just Average to get moving were holding out their arms in frustration like Philadelphia Eagles fans on Thursday night. The final furlong is where Smokin Cherie looked better than the competition, quicky closing in with more than enough time to spare. My Beautiful Ballon and Tried N True hung tough but could only watch Smokin Cherie take the lead approaching the wire to win by close to a length! Smokin Cherie is now 4-for-4 on the turf, and it will be interesting to see where she gets entered next! My Beautiful Ballon and Tried N True do go second and third, with Mollys Sweet Nectar joining Join Together for a fourth-place dead heat. The rest of the order will read Matey, Wobble Stopper, a flat Just Average, and Theatrical.

About The Winner- Smokin Cherie, trained by TwinTowersRacing and ridden to victory by D Davis, is a three-year-old filly by Smokin Luka and is out of Hot Cherie. He was bred in California as a second quarter two-year-old by TwinTowersRacing, the only trainer for which she has ever known. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her fifth in nine starts and first stake win of any sort. Her career earnings are now $148.960.
