| That may have been a bit closer than Mb Stables wanted it to be. Smoocher, sent off at slightly more than even money in Monday’s The PID Masters Stakes (GII) just was able to hold on as Dont Stop lived up to her name and Mischief Made gave the 4yo filly all she wanted. The final running time was 1:15.71 for the six and a half furlongs over the northern PA fast track.
Away from the gate in good order, Dont Stop was on the gas from the far outside, Cozzene Scandal and Smoocher between that pair. Natural Beauty from the inside was next, Mischief Made next to that one and Mondo Grosso was the early trailer from the rail. Flying down the backside and past the half-mile pole, Smoocher moved up to take a half length lead while four wide. Cozzene Scandal next to that one, Natural Beauty moving with that duo and Dont Stop from the rail. A gap of three back to Mischief Made and Mondo Grosso was still at the back, seven lengths from the leader. Swing around the far turn to the top of the lane and just two furlongs left to run, Smoocher continuing to show the way by a length and a half. Natural Beauty from the rail, Cozzene Scandal on her outside as that pair moved together. Another length and a half to Dont Stop, Mischief Made just in behind that one and Mondo Grosso still at the back and still seven lengths away. Now inside the furlong marker and Smoocher still in front by a length and a half, and she was running 4-5 wide down the lane. A wall of four in behind her with Natural Beauty, Dont Stop from the rail, Cozzene Scandal and Mischief Made both wide and Mondo Grosso had a lot of work to do. Inside the final 150-yards and to the finish, Smoocher in front, Dont Stop from the rail, Mischief Made from the far outside – both closing in fast as Smoocher looked weary… and as they hit the wire it was horse-flesh silks and dirt… and the PHOTO sign went up. After looking at the instant video replay, the placing judges put Smoocher in front by a long nose. Dont Stop just missed in a very game effort and Mischief Made was a hard-luck third. Natural Beauty was a length back in fourth, another neck to Cozzene Scandal and Mondo Grosso closed this one out. Smoocher is a 4yo bay filly by Tafadhali Nataka – Kissed A Girl, by Original Synn, and she was bred by Night Mare Racing in La. This was her ninth win from twenty-five starts, four of those coming from her six 2015 starts, and she now has $692.080 in earnings.
