Sniper Takes Them All the Way in Sensational Star

The 19th Running of the Sensational Star

03/20/2022 SA Race #6 17:10

$100.000 6.5 Furlongs Turf

CA-Bred 4yo+ 123 lbs

Track Record-1:10.91 (Alpha Ultimo-2006)

Stakes Record-1:12.05 (Second Chance-2006)

The Sunday feature at SA, a $100.000 6.5-furlong turf stake for older CA-bred sprinters, was over early for all intents and purposes.  Away sharply from stall two, Sniper quickly established a clear advantage and was never threatened on the SA hillside turf course in the Sensational Star.  The win improves the 6yo horse’s career ledger to 33-7-6-3 with earnings of $563.550 and makes him three for his last four on the downhill turf course.

Ahead by two lengths after a :22.51 opening quarter, Sniper increased his advantage to three lengths after he posted a :44.36 half-mile split.  Southern Fame, Blown Coverage, and Midnight Runner were always closest to the leader; however, none of them ever was able to really pressure the winner.

Down the lane Sniper was kept to his task, but he was a winner every step of the way and crossed the wire in 1:12.45.  Southern Flame was closest, a length and a half behind, and secured the place.  Controlled Power got the show money in a photo with Blown Coverage while Geronimo, Midnight Runner, Captain Que, Need More Cash, Cartomancist, and Bingo completed the order of finish.

Congratulations to Sniper and Avenue Z for their dominant victory in the Sensational Star!
