5 DMR Solana Beach Stakes
$150.000 3yo&Up F&M Bred in Cal 1m Dirt 3yo 120lbs Older 124lbs +penalties
A six-pack of Cal-bred ladies will be headed post-ward on Sunday, and we look at the field for the Solana Beach Stakes, going a flat mile on the lush DMR turf course, and I’m taking Catawba as the top choice today. She looked good winning at WO last out, and although that gives her two extra pounds, it was vs. open company… coming to Cal-bred should makes her a force today. Although she hasn’t won a race this season, I’ll put Capo Chino in the second spot. She just always seems to get a check and has been second in her last two starts. She just looks like a horse that is sitting on a win, or at least another big effort. .
Here’s the Field –

Hallowed Halls | Rock Creek | Espinoza V | 126 | 9/2 |
One of two top-weights, toting 126lbs, off of that Swingtime win back in Oct of last season. While I think that is not the way to do things, it’s the way things are. She’s been on the board in sixteen of twenty-three starts, so she knows how to get a check and I think you have to look for her to be in the hunt today, as well.

Mac N Cheese | Williams9 | Maldonado E | 120 | 7/1 |
Won a claimer back in Feb and a start in Apr, but has tired in her last two starts and this looks like a tougher group that either of those races. She’s been putting on the brakes in the late stages, and that has to stop.
|
Capo Chino | Asgar | Geroux F | 124 | 6/1 |
Speed is the game here, she’s quick and it’s just a matter of how far she goes. She’s been second in her last pair, but can she find just a bit more a take home a win? I think this is a spot where she could run off and hide.
|
Flesh And Blood | Night Rider Stables | Vazquez R A | 124 | 4/1 |
Two back, you could have claimed her for a mere $7.000, but her last two have been near misses at the Alw level and in the Keertana at CD. She’s always around for part of the purse and I expect more of the same here.
|
Catawba | Sccj Stables | Gutierrez Mario | 122 | 7/2 |
Got the job done at WO last out, taking the Alywow. It wasn’t as much ‘that’ she won, it was ‘how’ she won, lagging back early and turning on the jets to go past that group in the blink of an eye. That was her first time back on the weeds in quite a while, and she’s back for more.

Fioraia Ruler | Avenue Z | Alvarado F T | 126 | 5/1 |
Co-high-weight off of that win at SA in the Possibly Perfect, and she came back to throw a dud over this course in her most recent. If she runs her best, she could be in the middle of things, it just the inconsistency.
