The AR Derby – Grade I [KYD]
1 1/8 Mile Dirt Stake Purse $1,250.000 Open 3 Year Olds.
1st Mickey South Shore Stables Jaramillo E
A grade three winner on the turf he showed he could run the dirt when dead heating for the Gotham last time but there wouldn’t be many that were too confident he could get past the odds on favorite here. It just goes to show though how the draw and the race pace are so important because as the multiple stables didn’t or couldn’t find enough pace to kill off the stalkers it was horses that were all in that position that enjoyed the best pf the placings. This one was never far away and just kept grinding to the line to take a blanket finish by a nose.
He has traveled under the radar to get into the Derby field but i don’t think that will happen again after this win his fourth from his last five starts. Congratulations to South Shore Stables a fourth season trainer who is reaping the benefits of a steady career that seems to just about be taking off.
2nd Shadow Police Smokey Stover Ferrer J C
The draw or the pace kept her a lot closer today and whilst there will be those purists that will be celebrating her defeat i actually think considering the race wasn’t really run to suit her she did well enough to still be considered a major TC chance. beaten just a nose i think a strongly run KYD will suit her more than today’s muddling affair.
3rd Karloffs Monster TwinTowersRacing Davis D
This underrated filly had a torrid run round the outside as she stalked the lead but had to run a lot further than most. Beaten just a neck into third i feel she may have just about won with an inside trip and i reckon if she goes the KYD route she could be a lively outsider with a decent draw.
4th Loser Bay Gdp Inc Gonzalez Ru
The first four home all ran similar races stalking the very average pace and then all running home in very similar style. This gelding was only beaten a length which was quite an achievement for a horse coming here off a turf maiden win but the value of this run will only really be judged in his next start and i think as he wont be making the KYD field that may be an advantage as he has a lot of learning still to do.
