The Suwannee River – Grade III
1 1/8 Mile Turf Stake Purse $150.00 Filly & Mare 4 Year Olds And Up.
1st Speed Squared, trained by TwinTowersRacing
Claimed for $20.000 and beaten in a couple of overnights is not the sort of form you normally associate with grade three winners but such is HRP these days that a stakes race is just another Allowance so nobody should be surprised with this result i guess. Heavily backed by virtue of some good work times this four year old showed all sorts of tenacity to hold on for a game head win. In the stalk early she won in a fair race time in what was a muddling race, now the question will be whether she can build on this breakout performance.
2nd Street Baby, trained by Nakamura Stables
I expected she was going to run a big race and at the furlong pole i really thought she would go and win this race. Her stamina gave out in the end though and she went down narrowly fighting all the way to the line. I think she may end up best over the mile and with this run under her belt can only improve.
3rd Lucky You, trained by Maximillion Farm
Who would have thought a dual grade one winner would be beaten by a stakes virgin in a grade three but thats what happened albeit not by very far. Taken back a bit she ran on strongly but failed to get past the front two going down by just a neck in the end. This was a decent effort and one that says she is not a light of former days.
4th Shadow Of A Doubt, trained by Axeman
Taken way back in a race dominated by the speed she ran on well but couldnt get any closer than fourth. This was a good effort but one that proves this ageing mare needs the sort of trip that slows her rivals down a bit these days.
SUMMARY
There was just four lengths between first, a stakes virgin who had been beaten at allowance level and last, a grade two winner who had been shot out to the lead by the wide gate speed push. This race had everything that is HRP these days.
