The $200.000 G3 Peter Pan went to Smokey Stover as Spiced took advantage of a great trip to reach the wire 1:48.30 and just a neck in front of Killer Instinct. With the win, Spiced improved his record to five wins from ten starts and the gelding has earned $823.600 in his career.
Disciplinary was sent to the lead at the start and he was unopposed through the early stages. Reaching the opening half-mile in :47.19, Disciplinary was three lengths in front of the stalking trio of Burnsuwhenitshot, Spiced, and Rudy Is With Me. Killer Instinct was already four-wide as he was in no-man’s land between the second and third flights. Good Guy was in the middle of the three-horse third flight, and his trip would only get worse as they went around the oval.
The pursuers got a little closer to Disciplinary through the first half of the turn, and when he posted a 1:10.96 time for six-furlongs, his lead was down to two lengths as Spiced, Rudy Is With Me, Burnsuwhenitshot, and Killer Instinct gave chase from the second flight. At the top of the lane, Spiced was within a length of Disciplinary as he moved in tandem with Rudy Is With Me. Burnsuwhenitshot stuck to the rail while Killer Instinct attempted to circle from the six-path. Good Guy was running in the same path as Spiced, but he looked to be searching for an opening that just would not come.
Spiced drew even with Disciplinary after the mile was posted in 1:35.62, but there were multiple runners who were within striking distance. The pass wasn’t immediate as Spiced gradually wore down Disciplinary while, down on the rail, Burnsuwhenitshot found room and was making headway. Way out in the 7-8 path, Killer Instinct was trying to match strides with the new leader. While Killer Instinct was wide throughout, he fared much better than Good Guy. For the entirety of the stretch run, Good Guy simply had nowhere to go. Every time a glimpse of a seam appeared, it closed even quicker.
Spiced dug in and refused to allow the Mb Stables’ duo of Killer Instinct and Rudy Is With Me get by him and held sway through the line to claim a neck victory. Killer Instinct and Rudy Is With Me were clear for the place and show honors, respectively, while Burnsuwhenitshot just got the bob on an unlucky Good Guy for fourth. Completing the order of finish were Disciplinary, Crazy Ivan, Paco, and Dragons Teeth.
Congratulations to Spiced and Smokey Stover on their victory in the G3 Peter Pan at BEL!
