Five and a Half Furlongs on the Dirt

This weekend, EVD will showcase the future of LA-bred racing, with two stakes for two year olds that have either gotten off to a quick start and/or are showing strong promising early in their racing careers. Here, we will take a look at the fillies that will look to add their name to a list of past winners that may be lacking that one true great past winner, but has many horses which have gone on to have successful careers. Even though everyone wants their two year old filly to become a KYO winner, no one would complain if their filly followed the career of a horse like Fomenta, who won $560.000 over her career, or like the appropriately named Bourbon Street, who won over $660.000 in her lifetime. This is the ninth time that the stake has been run here, and up until 2011, it was run at five furlongs. Since 2012, the stake has been run at its current 5 1/2 furlong distance. No trainer has won the race more then once, and two jockeys are tied with two wins apiece in the stake: J Jacinto and G Melancon. Only the latter will have the chance to pick up their third win here.
#1- Problem So (Running Farms, ridden by J W Patin Jr)- The only entry in this field that has not yet won a race, placing third in her debut last month at LAD. In that race, the Walking Dead filly placed four lengths back in a race time that seems as though the others here will be able to top. Her works are generally level with her rivals here, so if she can improve off that race then she can contend here. We have seen non-winners win a race like this many times, but I am not thinking that Problem So is the horse to do that, especially against a couple of the rivals that she sees today.
#2- Ceeblee (Bmf Racing, ridden by B C Patin)- This autogen filly will already be making the fourth start of her career in the Young Memorial Futurity- Fillies. Her April debut was quite forgettable, and the trainer put her in for a $20.000 tag in her next start in May. In that race, she was much the best, dominating the four horse statebred field by six lengths. That race must be duplicated and improved upon a bit for her to have a shot at winning this race. Her last outing, on the soaked LAD in June does not instill much confidence and Bmf Racing must be hoping that the slop that day was the only reason for her finish. The works are good, but she has some tough company today in the starting gate.
#3- Spititual Ghost (Drabfantasy, ridden D Saenz)- Two year old stakes are frequently the territory of Drabfantasy, who has earned one of the best reputations for getting the most out of his horses early in their careers in our game. She is beautifully bred, and you will notice that she traces back to In Spirit (the mare of the great Five Fives) on both her sire and her dam sides. In fact, she has so much spirit within her bloodlines, that we don’t just call her spiritual, she’s coined a new adjective of spititual! On the track, she has raced twice so far, winning her maiden debut race at CD, then placing 4th at WO in the $125.000 Victoria Stakes three weeks ago. Her work times, particularly for six furlongs, are impressive and may be difficult for anyone in this field to beat. She is the most prepared to run this race then any of her rivals, and when you consider the trainer’s track record, how can you not like her? Spititual Ghost is the horse to beat.
#4- Pachuca Rose (Allinthegate, ridden by C J Hernandez)- Back in May, Pachuca Rose won the only race of her career thus far, capturing a three-horse state bred event. Despite the lack of competition, it should be noted that her winning time is the tenth fastest recorded at LAD this year by two year old fillies, so she could have beaten a larger field as well. The Pachuco Colors filly looks to be a good contender in this field as she has been working well at SA since that debut. She will be adding lasix for this, so if Allinthegate has found that will make her a little faster, then she may very well end up in the winner’s circle. Pachuca Rose isn’t my top choice, but this nicely-conformed filly looks as though she has a very bright future ahead of her.
#5- Minda (Royalty Racing, ridden by G Melancon)- Purchased in February in private sales for $30.770, this Chief Charley filly is already paying dividends for the trainer. In April, she won her debut over a good EVD track in an impressive time, given the conditions. After the victory, she has been on the farm with the trainer likely seeing what adds work out best for her. She will debut with bute in this race, so if that is helping her be even faster then she showed in April then Minda can win this race. She has three works here during the month of July, all of which indicate that she is ready to run here. Minda is my second choice, but I can see her turning the tables on Spititual Ghost in this one. With both Charley Farley and Jolly Be Great this filly has a ton of potential going forward.
