SA 7 San Carlos Stakes (GII)

They will be sprinting on Saturday afternoon and we look at the field for the 2020 running of the San Carlos Stakes (GII) at seven panels, here in SoCal.
We have a very nice field in this one and I’m going after last years BC Sprint winner, Con Artist, as my top choice. He was running well for Mb Stables prior to selling to Fractious for a pretty penny, then paid immediate dividends taking the big race. He bounced a bit in his ’20 debut but let’s look for him to turn that around.
Kiss The Snake is my second choice and he ran big in the BC Sprint as well, finishing fourth only a length back. Got ’20 off to a decent start in with a second place finish and looks ready to keep his mojo going.
I really like Peculiar Situation in this race, except for his running style coupled with the post position. He’s a stone-cold closer and the sling-shot outside post may not be to his liking (see the BC Sprint). If he can overcome that, he could be the one to beat.
Here’s The Field –

Blowberg | Estero Farms |
Bejarano R |
124 | 6/1 |
Got back to the winning ways kicking tail at CT in an OptAlw race. He was on a steady diet of graded races last you and brought home some serious cash in the process. Look for him to be a factor in the late stages of this one as well.

Kiss The Snake |
Nakamura Stables |
Franco G |
124 | 4/1 |
Three wins last season including a pair of GI’s, and was fourth just a length back on BC Day. Nice start to the season finishing the runner up at AQU in the Toboggan (GIII). He should put out another of his standard solid performances here.
|
Kill Command |
Fractious | Hernandez R M |
124 | 5/1 |
Five wins last season and four of those came after being nabbed for a mere $20.000 hostile takeover. Two of those were graded wins, so he’s not scared to run with this type. You must give him a serious look today.

Aussie Steel |
Arindel | Bridgmohan S X |
121 | 7/1 |
Three wins from nine starts in ’19 but he tailed off a bit at the end of the year. Already has two starts this season, both coming in Jan. H was second in a AlwS last out and will need to regain some of that old form to compete with this group.

A Beagle Named Boo |
John Henry |
Baze T C |
124 | 6/1 |
Nice win in the Mr Prospector on a muddy track to close out his ’19 season with a bang. Nice run here in his ’20 debut running second in the Palos Verdes (GIII) and another effort like that could put him in a good spot here.

Malibu Moon |
D J C Racing Stables |
Pennington F |
124 | 7/1 |
Five wins from nine starts last season but kicked off this season with a sour outing finishing seventh in the San Pasqual (GII). He is a bit of an all or nothing type, but his “all” would make him a tough nut in this one.
|
Con Artist |
Fractious | Velazquez J R |
124 | 3/1 |
Big year for this one in ’19 including a win in the BC Sprint (GI) after changing hands for $750.000. Not much in the General George where he got out-kicked in the late stages of that one. Is it a one-race hangover from the BC or…. I guess we see.

Zombie City |
Eastern Equine |
Beschizza A |
124 | 7/1 |
Consistent type that only had one win last year but still put a decent amount of cash away for only eight starts. Beat NY-bred stakes horses to close out the year and was third in the Hooper (GIII) to get this year started. He knows how to make his presence felt.
|
Shattered Pieces |
Rampage Stable |
Ortiz I Jr |
121 | 6/1 |
Only five starts in ’19 but he made the most of them winning three time and had a runner-up stakes race in a successful year. Was fourth in the Swale (GIII) and it doesn’t get any easier here. He will need his best.
|
Marx On The Moon |
Court Jester Racing |
Gryder A T |
124 | 8/1 |
Two wins last seasons but they came early in the calendar although he was close-up in a few other stakes efforts. He certainly faced the best of the best and has done similar this spring. Was third last out only a neck back, and will need more of the same to get a check here.
|
Peculiar Sensation |
Mb Stables |
Gaffalione T |
124 | 5/1 |
Three wins last year including a pair of graded wins, then kicked off ’20 with a solid try in the Palos Verdes (GII) where he closed like a freight train. The extra furlong should be to his liking and he may come with some odds.
|
Audioslave | Alydar Stables |
Maldonado E |
124 | 7/1 |
Nice win to kick-off ’20 taking the CA Cup Sprint, then got out-finished in the General George while fourth beaten less than a length. He was winless in ’19, so he’s already improved on that. Can he keep it going?

Nice run to be second in the Swale (GIII) at GP which was a nice bounce-back from the prior run at DMR. He throws a bad race every once in a while, but would need to draw in, would catch a bad post… you get the idea.
