How could you ever doubt the Turf King in a 12 furlong turf race? Well i didn’t really doubt that the horse could win but i was put off by the fact that he was beaten in a small TUP allowance in April and then second last in the San Capistrano. But history is history at HRP and we have seen plenty of horses go from claimers or maidens to stakes glory and this one’s effort in the DMR Handicap last time had next up written all over it. Settling off what was just an average pace at best i thought the leaders may have an advantage but he cruised through and out stayed his rivals by a very easy two lengths. How good is this five year old? Well he is showing some very late improvement and he could be one of those that comes to his best in his later years.

He tracked the winner but didn’t really get the run at the right time and it was all over by the time he got going. There is a good win in this one in the not too distant future he just needs to get his head in the right place.

I was surprised he started favorite from the wide gate but the confidence came from his very fast mile works recently and some consistent form. Going back from the wide draw he was always going to struggle to get to the leaders off a slow average time and though he ran on strongly he suffered the closers curse and could only manage third.

Held a great position and closed up nicely looking like he was going to go on but his stamina gave out in the end and he just whacked away under the whip. Not a bad effort but i feel he is more of a miler.
