WO- For Fillies Two Years Old Foaled in Canada
One Mile and One Sixteenth on the Dirt
October 29, 2017
So far in her young career, Sweet Oly has really enjoyed racing here at WO. In her third race at this track, she picked up her third win, giving her four wins in six overall starts thus far. There was no bigger win then this one for the Mount Olympus filly, and we felt would be one of the biggest threats to win the race. Sweet Oly seems to also have taken a liking to making a thrilling stretch close, as her prior win at this track was sort of the same, although today’s effort was the more impressive of the two. Enjoying the win, is her trainer Fractious, who won the stake for the first time in their career. With this filly, there may be more stakes down the road that she will pick up for them as well. Aboard the winner was D Moran, the first win in the stake for the regular WO rider. Congratulations to them! The time of the win was 1:43.18, the third quickest in the history of the race. Let’s take a look at how it played out!
(1/4 Mile- :24.55)- No one is particularly aggressive right from the starting gate, but as the first frontstretch trip begins to move into the turn, Exempt, from Mb Stables, decides she’s going to seize this opportunity. She’d lead by a length or so going into the turn, and then pulled away more and more within this turn to the point of extending the advantage to three at the top of the backstretch. No one was eager to chase her. Arguing (Team 7 Illusions) would be second, but was more content to run side by side with Tulia (Crocker Ggs). Informant (Smokey Stover) was six out, with the eventual winner, Sweet Oly (Fractious) being eight lengths out.
(½ Mile- :48.80)- Exempt continues to pour it on in the lead, extending her advantage to as many five lengths on the backstretch, over the second place battle which continued to be between Arguing and Tulia running for that spot. Exempt was looking pretty sharp here, and this fractions did not seem overbearing at all. Would the field regret letting her get away like this? Towards the back, Sweet Oly had passed Informant, but still had about seven lengths to make up, herself.
(Top Of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- Exempt would continue to lead, but there would be trouble looming behind her. Sweet Oly made her intentions known as soon as the run around the turn began, and quickly gained ground on the second place battle between Arguing and Tulia. Just as she drew level with them, they also hit a switch of their own to push forward, with Tulia particularly looking good here. With these three wide and all in full stride, the distance to the race leader, Exempt, was now just two and a half lengths. Informant was in advancing well, and got her own deficit to four lengths.
(Finish- 1:43.18)- Both Sweet Oly and Tulia look strong at the top of the stretch, and they make quick work of passing Exempt, who while she did not completely retreat, she would have nothing for this challenge. Sweet Oly was less then a half length ahead of Tulia for this run and needed to show a lot of heart to be able to maintain the advantage over Tulia, who gave everything she had. Informant made a four wide move in the stretch, and was good, but conceded too much ground. Arguing ran steady with her rivals to the finish line as well, and does end up ahead of Informant for the third position. Exempt went from first to last.
About The Winner: Sweet Oly, trained by Fractious and ridden to victory by D Moran, is a two year old filly by Mount Olympus and out of Sneaky Sweet. She was bred in Ontario by John Henry as a first quarter two year old, and acquired by Fractious after two races, in private sales in July for $150.000. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her fourth in six starts, and her third stake win! Her career earnings are now $346.200.
