9 SA San Felipe Stakes (GII) [KYD]

Well, we’ve been to NY, down to FLA and now to the left coast for the San Felipe Stakes (GII), a mile and a sixteenth test for the sophomore TC types, and this one is a real head-scratcher to me. We have horses that fall into just about every category… horses that have been on the trail, horses that just broke maiden, horses that were claimed and came back big, others that sold privately… you get the picture. So, now, where do we go?
Boss Spearman is a horse that fits one of the above categories as he changed hands via private sale, then one at first asking for Wood Duck Stables, taking the Withers (GIII) in a nice way, closing well to take that race. He’s a horse that appears to be on the move, but the shorter distance is a concern to me. Let’s see how he handles that.
Staying in our categories, Moonlightonthewabash was claimed two back for a mere $28.000 then ran second in the Lewis Stakes (GIII) over this track in his first start for the new barn. He won both of his prior starts, vs. softer, but ran a big race in that local stakes, only beaten a nose. Solid am gallops getting ready for this, so I think he makes some noise again today.
As I always say, you don’t leave Mb Stables off of your tickets in these prep races, so Grit And Grind gets the nod for the third spot on our wagers. He was struggling along in the sprint races but looked like a different horse when dismissed at 10/1 odds in the Holy Bull (GIII) at GP, where he had the lead turning for home and still took the second spot, just a quarter length back.
