Mb Stables’ undefeated Blazing By will lead a field of ten juvenile fillies in the $200.000 Grade II Sorrento Stakes at DMR Sunday for tw0-year-old fillies at 6 furlongs on dirt. After scoring a handy win in her debut at GG, registering the highest SRF first start win of this group, she jumped straight to the $100.000 Debutante at CD winning the race easily in stakes record time. Her recent works have been outstanding, working :58 1/5H, the fourth fastest filly juvenile filly work of the year.
Sanny Village’s Southern Sleuth won her debut at PIM in a game come from behind score and followed up with a second place tie in the $100.000 My Dear Stakes at WO last month, again displaying her late running ability. Lightly worked, she has been turning 6 furlongs in 1:11 3/5H. La Canada Racehorses’ Test Of Time took a couple of races to win Hndily at PIM and then came back to storm from very last to second behind Blazing By in the Debutante. Her 6 furlong works promise she will be a factor in this race.
Fractious sends out Navette, which took three races to win a hard-fought effort at CD, then came back to run fifth in the My Dear, beaten only a length as the favourite. Her works have consistently been among the best in the virtual world for juvenile fillies. Despite her finishing position in the My Dear, she looks to be a threat here.
The remaining runners have no stakes experience but have been showing promise with sharp works and maiden victories. Of these, Rampage Stable’s Sharp Suit seems most promising with a game win in the mud at WO in June and two of the top three 5-furlong works of the year. Challenging from the outside post is Chili King Stables’ Little Miss Fast which finished third in a CD allowance race after scoring a handy win at GG in her second start. She boasts a top fifteen 1:11H work recently, as well.
Blushing Meadows’ $100.000 purchase, The Gazelle, came from last to score a nose win at WO in her second start for her colourful connections, and the extra furlong here makes her a strong possibility for the money. Coming from one of the top breeding farms in the virtual world, her pedigree alone makes her the dark horse here. Delta Farms sends out Commanding Athena which posted a game victory at ELP last out and an impressive :58 3/5H work recently. Night Rider Stables’ Spicy Poke steps up from Statebred racing at PA where the third try was the charm with a handy wire-to-wire win at PEN in June. Her laste 6-furlong work matched the top fifteen work by Little Miss Fast. Nakamura Stables’ Obvious Fraud posted an easy come from behind win at ALB in June after running second in her debut at PRX in April. Her running style indicates she will appreciate the added distance of this race.
Every horse in this race has shown the ability and drive to come home first, but Blazing By has shown the most without having been challenged yet. Southern Sleuth and Test Of Time have shown the indications that they will be most likely to give her a challenge at the wire, and I would say Sharp Suit would be the longshot chance.
