6 BEL The Phipps Stakes (GI) [BC]
$500.000 4yo&Up F&M 1 1/16m Dirt 123 lbs
Handicap Fillies and Mares will be headed post-ward on Saturday afternoon and we look at the field for The Phipps Stakes (GI) [BC]. This is a very talented group but for me it stops and starts with La Marseilaise. I know she was fourth last out in the Apple Blossom, but that OP track can be tough on some horses, with the very sharp turns. I think she bounced back in a big way here on Big Sandy and dusts their britches.
Here’s The Field –
She has six wins from sixteen starts so she know how to get to the wire, but this is a step up in class for her, so it may not come quite as easy. Still, she can get the job done and maybe she just keeps on going with it.
Tough mare here, and she just never seems to run a bad race. Won the La Troienne (GI) at CD last out and looks to keep building on that form. Two wins and two seconds this year, all vs. graded horses… yeah, she’s good.
Got her first win of the season last out in the Apple Blossom (GI) at OP and showed a nice flash of tactical speed in that one. Can she do that again here today? If so, she may hard to get past.
Three wins in a row and four for her last five, so she has this race horse thing down. Step up in class today, so it will be interesting to see how she does against this caliber of competition. If nobody tells her, she may just run off and hide.
She’s a nice one, no doubt about it… the defending BC F&M Sprint (GI) champ and don’t be fooled, she can get a route of ground as well. Closed to be fourth in the Apple Blossom (GI) but I think this is a place where she can get the job done in a big way.
Nice win over this surface and at the distance last out taking the Ruffian Hcp (GII) and that was her second graded score of the season. She is a mare that can run with the best of them, loves the distance and must be given serious consideration today.
Has a mixed bag of finishes of late, but she won two back taking Alw types then closed to be third in the La Troienne (GI) so if she can take it up a notch, she could be a factor here as well.
Won The Very One (GIII) at GP and just missed last out when second in the La Troienne (GI) where she gave an even yet solid effort that afternoon. She run with some big horses and her best could make her tough.
Three wins from her last four starts… so she sold… She looked good winning the Derby City (GI) at CD in her most recent, and she just flew around the turn to get to the front in that one. Another like that puts her in the middle of things.
Won the Azeri (GII) at OP two races back, but was fourth in the Vinery (GI) and fifth in the La Troienne (GI) where she was send off as the favorite. She will need to step it up, but her best… yeah, you’ve heard it.
