The Inside Information (Grade 2)- $200.000 Purse
GP- For Fillies and Mares Four Years Old and Upward
Seven Furlongs on the Dirt
January 23, 2021
Tenrikyo has had a long and storied career, but in The Inside Information, she was going to attempt something that she had not done in almost two years: run under a mile. The last time that she did this was in February 2019, as a young three year old. She has done quite a bit since then, like winning the KYO and running second in the BC Distaff in 2019, but Smokey Stover wanted to see how she would handle seven furlongs, and in doing so, she would have jockey J R Velazquez aboard. Velazquez has been very successful with her when given a chance, and that combination would work out here to perfection. This is the first time that Smokey Stover has won this stake, and the third time that Velazquez has rode the winner. Congratulations to them! The race was run in a time of 1:21.79, the second quickest in the history of the race. Let’s take a look!
(¼ Mile- :23.22)- Tenrikyo wastes no time here, jumping out ot the early lead for her trainer, Smokey Stover, but she does have some company on the front end to start in the form of Spankys Barn’s Malagan Girl. These two pull out to a two length advantage over a group of three that were running three wide down the backstretch. Gravel and Wine held the slight advantage here while running on the rail for Iolaus Racing, with First Impression, from Mb Stables, in the middle, and the newcomer to the Fractious fold, The Belle Tolls on the outside. Dancinginflorida was tucked in right behind them for Night Rider Stables, and to her outside was Spy On Hollywood (Estero Farms). It’s another length to On The Flop (Team 7 Illusions) and Charity Jane (RNP Stables) with Wbf No Regrets (TwinTowersRacing) behind them. It’s about 2-3 more to the trailers, La Marseillaise (Witeout Stables) and Tommy Frazier (John Henry).
(½ MIle- :46.13)- Tenrikyo looks real good in the backstretch and going into the turn as she opens up a length lead on Malagan Girl. It’s still a couple more to the three-wide group that battles for third. That now sees First Impression as the horse slightly in front, but both Gravel And Wine and The Belle Tolls run close by on each side all the while having Dancinginflorida running very close behind. Spy On Hollywood is beginning to show some interest in moving forward now, and looks to make an outside move to accomplish this.
(Top Of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- Tenrikyo is out in front, now by about two lengths as she looks very comfortable on the front end. Not a good idea for the others in the field to let her get away like this, since she is used to running longer distances. Malagan Girl is having a hard time keeping pace, is now about to lose more spots in the stretch. The Belle Tolls continued her steady run, but swung way out to do this entering the stretch. First Impression held her line, as Spy On Hollywood continued to inch a little closer. Dancinginflorida was looking good here as well, as she tried to find some room to the outside of Malagan Girl which could potentially give her a good inside trip for the stretch. Not much to talk about behind them.
(Finish- 1:21.79)- It was all over at the top of the stretch as long as Tenrikyo could maintain her stride, and as mentioned, as a horse that is used to running longer, you knew she would. That is how the stretch run would play out, as this classy filly wins comfortably, scoring the wire to wire triumph! The Belle Tolls, who drifted out far more than was ever necessary, takes second, but was beaten by a length. Dancinginflorida gets up for third, narrowly over a fourth place dead heat between First Impression and Spy On Hollywood. On The Flop and Tommy Frazier found their way past Malagan Girl late, and the rest of the order is Wbf No Regrets, Charity Jane, Gravel And Wine, and the very disappointing La Marseillaise.
About The Winner- Tenrikyo, trained by Smokey Stover and ridden to victory by J R Velazquez, is a five year old mare by Grandeur and is out of Set Sail. She was bred in Florida by Smokey Stover as a second quarter two year old, the only trainer for which she has ever known. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her eighth in 20 starts, and her sixth stake win, all of which are graded. Her career earnings are now $2,352.360.
