Preference to BC Turf Sprint Points |
The turf course and speed will be the story of the 2015 BC Turf Sprint (GI) as the gate should be full and we have a bit of everything in this one. A couple of females have shown up for the five and a half furlong dash, we have an 8yo that may be in the best shape of his life, and a 7yo that is on a twelve-race win streak.
Can you really take a horse for the win other than Spanish Destroyer? The ol gray boy hasn’t been beaten since forever, has been on the board in 45 of his 62 starts and was purchased for less money than RL John Henry. He won the Woodford (GIII) at the distance and over this track… everything just seems to be on his side.
I’ll put Big Bird on the bottom of the exacta. Nice back to back sprint wins, and both on the grass. He seems to be able to show speed or sit back in a stalking position, so his versatility makes him a very big factor. I’ll include T S Friday for a part, even though he had back to back runner-up finishes, second isn’t always bad. He’s another that can show speed or close, and in a field this big that can be very helpful.
Good luck to everyone – it should be a great race!
Here’s the field….
It’s been a real hit-or-miss season for this one, but the good new is most of the hits have come on the grass at sprinting distances. Won the San Simeon (GIII) in a DH on the downhill turf at SA, then came right back to win the Jaipur (GIII) at BEL, this time at 6f on the NY grass. This is certainly an acid test for this one, but for a $20.000 claim, he’s certainly proven to be a smart tag.
This speed-ball makes an interesting move as he’s NEVER been on the lawn, and they pick the biggest stage to make the move. His two seasonal wins were certainly head-turners, taking both the Day Mile (GIII) and the Crosby (GI). Still, it’s just hard to get past the fact that he’s never been on the lawn, even though his works seem to indicate that he likes it. I guess we find out today.
Won his first two starts of the ’15 season and it’s been a bit of a battle since then. His last three starts go 8th/7th/8th, and that’s obviously not what you want coming into Championship Day. He was second in the Highland (GII) at WO on the grass, He’s going to need his best in this one to see any kind of a check.
This one is still eligible for NW2x but he’s been very competitive in the states starts that he has made. Second in the Play King (GII) at WO and a closing third in the Eddie D (GIII) on the SA downhill course, he certainly seems like a horse that is an up-and-comer, but this is the best of the best, and he will need his best to be involved today.
The ol’ boy hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down… even at 7yo, he’s having a pretty good season. Looked good winning the San Simeon (GIII) in a DH and taking the Highland (GII) at WO. Closed well last out to be beaten a length over in the field races, so even though he’s a senior citizen, he still packs a punch.
He’s good… bet him! OK OK… I’m kidding to a point, but what can you say about this good lookin’ son-of-a-gun? He’s eleven for eleven this season and has twelve consecutive wins, dating back to before he was sold at the December 2014 Auction for just $1.350. Since then for this 8yo, it’s been “just win baby” and it’s hard to go against him here.
Back to back wins from this one after a couple of longer races. That win in the Nearctic (GII) was very impressive in my eyes, as he really looked beaten at one point, but worked his way through the field and nailed em on the wire. He looks ready for another big effort here.
Tried sprinting and it certainly worked out as he took the Play King (GII), and he seems to be a horse that likes the 7f to mile distance. This is going to be a place where he will need to show a bit more early speed or he could get shuffled back and it will take a huge run to get into the fray. The 3f work seems to be an attempt to sharpen those skills, so I like the prep work.
It’s been a long season for this one, as he’s still looking for his first win of the year. He did set the pace and got nailed on the wire in the Woodford (GIII) over this course, so if you’re looking for an upside, he may like the going here.
She’s been lightly raced this year and actually took on the boys last out in a near miss at WO in the Nearctic (GII). She won her other turf start this season, so there are a couple of points that make you want to give this one a chance v. the boys. The barn is sharp and why not?
Nice run in the Eddie D (GIII) at SA last out where he certainly flexed his sprint muscles winning that one. That was his third win from seven starts this year, and he seems to be a win or go home type as his other four starts were off-the-board efforts. He was sixth in the Shaker (GIII) over this course back in the spring, and I don’t like that at all.
First or second in six of eight starts this year, and he certainly knows how to bring home a check. Second in back to back stakes tries and won the Troy at SAR prior to those efforts. He was on the board in 8 of 9 starts last year, so he’s certainly a horse that you should give a look at.
This mare is the picture of consistency, showing three wins a pair of seconds and a third from her six seasonal starts, and only missed the board once last year in seven trips to the gate. She’s never faced the boys before but she does have the tactical speed to make her a factor today.
Two wins from his six seasonal starts and has shown a speedy side. Looked good winning the Turf Monster (GIII) in Philly, and both of his wins this year have come on the turf… as a matter of fact, he’s four for five on the turf.
Will need some luck to draw into this one, but I’m not sure they want to be in here anyway. He’s been good when facing Cal-breds, and did win an open Starter race back in July.
Was sixth in the Woodford (GIII) in his most recent and that was his first stakes try since back in March when he was second at GP. He has some tactical speed and this may be his best distance. But it will take a minor miracle to draw in.
I don’t think this is what they want.
Has been withdrawn from the race.
