The Bolton Landing ($150.000 Purse)
SAR- For Fillies Two Years Old
Five and a Half Furlongs on the Turf
August 21, 2022
A field of seven fillies will get together for the eighth running of the Bolton Landing, which is a great opportunity for those two year olds who show an early liking for the turf in their careers. When I saw this race on my schedule, I thought for sure that I would be writing up a full field, so I’m a bit surprised that this stake isn’t targeted a little more. In the history of the Bolton Landing, it has been a very good thing to have J R Velazquez in the saddle as the jockey has been aboard the winner in five of the previous seven races. He’s up at WO on Sunday, so other jockeys will get a chance to get a Bolton Landing win. On the trainer side of things, we have had a different winner in each of the seven races. In 2021, that winner was Gdp Inc with his filly, One Bay. She would find her way to the BC Juvenile Turf Sprint, a race that saw several fillies entered, but she began to fizzle out over this year, and was retired in late July. Last year’s race also saw Amy Is Shameful, for La Canada Racehorses, who was the third in the Bolton Landing, but went on to win the BC Juvenile Turf Sprint. Who will emerge as the ones we remember the most from this field? Time will tell, let’s get our winner first!
#1- Jersey Childe (Asgar, ridden by K Carmouche)- Broke her maiden here against NY-breds last month, in her fourth career start. For Jersey Childe, it was her first time running on the grass as well as her first time running with lasix and those factors may have been what put her over the top. She had hit the board in her prior three starts, so she has always been flashing potential. Her last work isn’t bad but doesn’t really excite me when comparing to the others, but there can be many reasons for it.
#2- To Sheila (South Shore Stables, ridden by F Prat)- Made three starts, and it’s the race in the middle that was the impressive one. That’s where she broke her maiden, coming at GG, and of course, we can throw out the debut race. It’s her most recent start that is the most concerning, and that’s probably what prompted the trainer to run her on the grass here for the first time. There’s only one public turf work on her record, so to an outsider, it’s hard to predict how this move will go.
#3- Ideal Flirt (Lindeman Prairie, ridden by J Lezcano)- This filly broke her maiden in her second start, coming at LAD, and from there was sent to BTP for the $75.000 Tah Dah Stakes. She wasn’t bad there, but her fifth place finish did not earn anything for the trainer. This will be her turf debut, and with her, there are several public turf works to look at. They should certainly put her in the mix.
#4- Dolly P (Arindel, ridden by D Davis)- Went north of the border for her last month and picked up a win in a $123.200 maiden. It was also the first time that she run with lasix, and it seems as though it helped her quite nicely. Arindel’s been preparing her since that win to run on the grass, and she’s put together some works that really grab your attention. Figures to be one of the favorites here, and even if she doesn’t win, she looks to have a bright future ahead of her.
#5- Risky Maneuver (Mb Stables, ridden by J J Castellano)- Only two starts on this one, and that includes a win in her in April at AQU. Off that victory, she was sent to the $150.000 Astoria at BEL, and it was a solid result for the Fire N Fury filly, but she came up short from earning a piece of the purse. It’s been two months since then, and she’s been regularly working on the turf since then. Her stablemate might be a tick quicker in the morning, but she can make that up here.
#6- Sweet Feet (Mb Stables, ridden by J A Gomez)- This aforementioned stablemate of Risky Maneuver put together a work at PRX at the beginning of August, which is quicker than anyone here has done at six furlongs. That said, sometimes turf works at PRX go a little quicker. Sweet Feet made her turf debut right here in her last start, and would break her maiden for a $100.000 purse, earning a 89 SRF. No one in the field has a quicker SRF, though Risky Maneuver has equaled it.
#7- Flipped and Popped (Gdp Inc., ridden by S X Bridgmohan)- The trainer looks for his second consecutive win here in the Bolton Landing, and it comes with a filly that scored a two length win in her turf debut at CD at the beginning of July. She looked sharp prior to that on the main track, and she may become one of those horses that can go back and forth between surfaces without any issue. Had a strong work at MTH last week in preparation.
Prediction: 4-6-1-5
