DMR Futurity – Grade I (P4)
7 Furlongs Dirt Stake Purse $300.000 Open 2 Year Olds.
1st Up In Smoke Jive Inc. Moran D
Well just imagine what this one could do with a decent draw! That is four from four with draws wider than center and now he is a dual stakes winner. Taking the initiative from the wide gate he started fast and quickly made the lead, from then on in it was a tough watch for the owner. If this was real life we may have watched him untested and cantering for much of the journey and when the others started to engage in the chase the jockey tightened the reins and clicked him up and he responded with ease. As this is HRP though we had to use or imagination as he headed to the stretch off a very good pace and looked set up to be run down. It never happened though as the rest struggled to make any ground and he maintained the advantage to the line winning by a very comfortable length, i would like to say eased down but we will never know!
He certainly is an advertisement for the click and run use of instructions, especially when you look at his last two runs from very similar draws. Last time out it was last and closing like a train, this time it was fast and lasting home. I think with a good draw in the BC he will be very hard to beat but the extra trip as always could make things very different.
This must be a great moment for the trainer who sold this ones half brother to Mb Stables and well we all know what happened with that one. Congratulations to the owner and the ageing sire on another great horse.
2nd Killer Instinct Mb Stables Gonzalez Ru
Well Mb Stables doesn’t like losing but i think they will take this as his Graduation winner all but booked his place in the BC and ran on like a horse that will see out the longer trip. He was tenacious all the way to the line closing on the winner and out fighting his other rivals in a battle of inches. Still an entire he has yet to run out of the money and has plenty of scope for improvement so this will be another to add to the arsenal of the champion trainer as we head towards November.
3rd Come With Assets Fractious Davis D
He got a bit closer to Killer Instinct this time but still couldn’t beat him. Coming from further behind he finished off really nicely and will help the trainer come to terms with the $550 that they had to spend to secure it from Harrell Racing. A son of Asset Class he will love the extended trip in the BC and the way he ran today he could be a lively hope.
4th= Dwindle Mb Stables Ortiz I Jr
Chased the leader on a fast pace and we often see the leaders kick on in that situation and the stalker fade and sure enough that is what happened to this one although he stayed close enough to dead heat for the minor cheque. That’s the third time he has gone up on the speed and i wonder now if the trainer will try him further back and save some juice for the finish.
4th= Grouse Mountain John Henry Bahen S R
He was taken way back from his wide draw and with the solid pace i was expecting a bigger finish. He did look dangerous at one point but was so wide his threat flattened out and in the end he had to share fourth. This was a good effort and whilst i feel his trainer may be scratching their head a little i would think there are better days to come for him.
