Haskell is a “Pip” for Chili King Stables

8/2/2015   Post Time 3:30pm
RACE 9 MTH   The Haskell (GI) [BC]
$1,000.000   3yo   1 1/8m    Dirt

If you have a weak stomach, don’t hang around Chrystal Pip…  just as he did in the BEL Derby (GI), the last few jumps was where he made the race, and this time there was no DH.  Closing like a late-moving freight train, the Chili King Stables trained 3yo got up in the last few jumps to take Sunday’s Haskell (GI) [BC] by a neck, and bring home the lion’s share of the $1,000.000 purse, getting the mile and an eighth in 1:47.99 while being send off at a staggering 25/1.  Generals Companion was second with Cap Canaveral rounding out the trifecta.

The field of nine got away well and Generals Companion was away quickest of all, Cape Canaveral, Im Too Confident between that pair.  Here I Come, Seeking The Wild and Port On The Horizon from the rail, Viding Jedi and King Cobra from the outside, and Chrystal Pip between them, the early trailer.

By the crowd the first time, dashing off through the clubhouse turn and nearing the backside with six furlongs to run, Generals Companion was leading by a length.  Cape Canaveral on his inside, another length back to Im Too Confident, Here I Come inside of that one.  Another length, Seeking The Wild on the rail, King Cobra four wide and Port On The Horizon between horses.  Two more back to Viking Jedi and Chrystal Pip was at the rear five lengths covering them.

The field was nearing the far turn and went past the five-sixteenth’s pole with Generals Companion showing the way by a length and a half.  Cape Canaveral still trying to give chase.  Two lengths back to the trio of Here I Come, Im Too Confident between horses and King Cobra from the outside.  Another length to Seeking The Wild in a ground saving trip, Port On The Horizon, Viking Jedi between horses and Chrystal Pip was last and very wide.

Swing around the far turn and to the top of the lane, just three-sixteenth’s left to run and Generals Companion was still leading by nearly two lengths.  Cape Canaveral trying to find more, Here I come just a length off of that one and King Cobra right along side.  Another length back to a wall of horses, and everyone had a shot from here.

Now inside the furlong marker, Generals Companion on the lead by more than a length, Cape Canaveral trying to close in, Here I Come still in it King Cobra swinging out for the drive and now Chrystal Pip going by horses in a hurry… the rest needed to find a heck of a lot more to be in the picture here, and the race to the wire was on.

Inside the final 150-yards and to the finish, Generals Companion in front, but Chrystal Pip coming fast… and as they went under the wire, Chrystal Pip was up in the final strides to nail Generals Companion for the win.  Cape Canaveral hung on for third with Here I Come in fourth.  King Cobra was fifth, Viking Jedi in sixth, Port On The Horizon, Seeking The Wild in eighth and Im Too Confident tired late to be last in he field of nine.

Chrystal Pip is a 3yo chestnut cold by Pip Boy – Chrystal Bubba, by Chrystal Ball, and he was bred by his owner, Chili King Stables, in Cal.  This was his fourth win from thirteen starts and he now has $1,561.520 in earnings, with the bulk of that coming in his last two starts – both GI wins!
