Six and a Half Furlongs on the Dirt

A new stake will appear on the schedule on Saturday as The Lively Shively takes place at CD, offering a $200.000 purse for two year old sprinters. The distance of the race is six and a half furlongs, and it gives us a mixture of horses making their stake debut and others who have quite a bit of experience at this level. There are no horses in the field that ran in a BC race at the start of the year. We’ll take a look now at those horses running in the race as they hope to be the first winner of this new stake.

#1- Arrangement (Fractious, ridden by T Gaffalione)- Claimed from Mb Stables for $65.000 after winning the maiden claiming race at SAR. He was not able to enjoy the victory all that much though, as he was gelded later that day. Since then, he has run in two stakes for ON-breds, highlighted by running second in the Clarendon. Both of those races came on a “good” track surface.

#2- Tacitus (D J C Racing Stables, ridden by D Cohen)- Had one of those debut races in September that will always make you wonder if the horse is going to become a complete bust. Sometimes, after a debut of that magnitude, they respond extremely well, and that was fortunately the case for Tacitus, who broke his maiden at FL last month, and is ready to build on that here.

#3- Gnome Guitar (Woogaloo, ridden by R Santana Jr)- This colt by Dirty Names has made four career starts, and his two victories came during the summer months. After breaking his maiden and winning an allowance, he ran in the $100.000 Smoke Glacken Stakes at MTH, and did not cash a check, but his fifth place effort was respectable. He’s had a couple months since that to get that little bit more speed he may need.

#4- Orange Chicken (Arindel, ridden by E Jaramillo)- In March, there is always a lot of hype over the DMR Trials, and more of than not, our winner does not do much else for their career. Up In Smoke has had a strong two year old season, but don’t forget about Orange Chicken being right behind him, who also has had a great year. Sure, he’s only won once out of seven starts, but ran well in both the Bashford Manor and the Display Stakes at WO. Maybe that Hopeful was a little much right now, but he’s settled in to being a productive horse while others have emerged a little stronger for Arindel.

#5- Dark Fury (Waldo, ridden by Ci Murphy)- Another horse that comes into the race off of breaking his maiden. For Dark Fury, that took four races and maybe a bit of lasix to finally get the job done. He had hit the board in each of his prior three races, all for Tiratzo, before winning his debut with Waldo following a $70.000 private sales transaction.

#6- China (Aer Stables, ridden by R J Albarado)- While Waldo has done a great job thus far with Dark Fury, he may have let one get away with China. In June, his second career start was at MNR in a maiden claimer, and Harrell Racing took notice, claiming him for the $9.000, in a race China ended up winning. However, he would never race for Harrell, who instead sold him a month later to Aer Stables for $70.000. Nice profit for not ever running the horse! Made one start for Aer, on the grass at PRX, and placed fourth.

#7- The Martian (Mo Mentum Farm, ridden by J Talamo)- Prior trainer South Beach Racing ran this horse three times, and earned a wire to wire win with him at the beginning of the month at CT. Then, on the 16th, he was sold to Mo Mentum Farm for $400.000. That’s quite a hefty price tag for a horse that up to this point only has $23.000 in career earnings, but Mo Mentum is obviously very high on him as evidenced by nominating him here so quickly.

#8- No More Rattle (Bigchief Stables, ridden by F Geroux)- For his debut, he was placed into a $12.500 maiden claiming race, and Bigchief took a shot on the unraced horse. After taking some time with him, No More Rattle appeared again in September, and broke his maiden right here at CD. He followed that up impressively, running second in a close photo in the Bowman Mill. He’s working well and all signs point to having a big run right here.
