Vinery Madison – Grade I
7 Furlongs Dirt Stake Purse $650.000 Filly & Mare 4 Year Olds And Up.
1st Lady Sammyantha The Sidley Stud Lopez P
This brilliant filly is in such irresistible form at the moment and always looked the winner despite a little scare as they ran to the line. A great champion this was her sixth win in a row since last June when her streak started with a win in the grade three Chicago, since then there have been three grade one victories including of course that second BC Sprint title and today she added a second Vinery Madison win to her growing list of achievements. Perhaps the rain or perhaps the trip but the much-anticipated clash with Wasted Away didn’t materialize although that great routing mare made a good go at it finishing just outside the top four after eyeing up the champ for much of the race. There were some good runs in behind her and the winning margin wasn’t as comfortable as it looked like it was going to be on the turn, but she did it in her usual professional way and there can be no doubt that this champion mare is going to go down in the history books as one of the greats.
2nd Lady Lara Night Mare Racing Geroux F
If it wasn’t for a horse like Lady Sammyantha we would be lauding this exciting closing filly. She went back as usual, but the off track kept her a bit closer than usual, and she launched her telltale late run as they hit the stretch and was taking ground off the winner all the way to the line. Her running style is exciting to watch but will always cause her problems at HRP as it is hard for a deep closer to find consistency in their finish but if there is any horse that can topple the great mare it will be this one.
3rd Smokin Cara Alydar Stables Conner T
You can pretty much just write ditto for this mare after the comments I just made about Lady Lara as she too is an exciting closer who was rattling home. Again, the off track allowed her to travel a bit closer to the pace but by the time she got clear running the winner was posing for photos.
4th Silly Relleno Rock Creek Husbands M J
A really good effort in probably the best field of fillies and mares ever assembled for a seven-furlong race. She was gamely keeping on and managed to beat home Wasted Away so whilst fourth won’t bring her monetary gain, she can go home with her head held high.
