There has been much talk about large fields at HRP causing problems with the new race engine but this race with only seven runners saw three horses that included the two grade one winners in the field get that horrible slow break and then just stay at the back and do nothing.
Meanwhile the seven horse race became a four horse race and this son of Ye Charley was the one who benefited. Getting to the front where he loves to be he never found the rail but instead sat on the front end controlling the tempo. He set a pace he was comfortable with and when the others tried he just kept kicking and won by a very game quarter length.

A lovely effort by this grand old campaigner who once again tried his heart out and won another paycheck.

I was shocked that this seven year old with 22 starts for sixty bucks in prize money was installed as favorite against this calibre field. He started well but was taken back only to storm home late and fail by just a quarter length. His last two starts seem to indicate that his improvement curve is a little later than most and i wont be passing him over the next time he runs.

Beaten half a length into fourth in a good race full of stakes horses and he ended up going home ten bucks down. Such is life here at HRP where making a buck is very hard work. He stalked the lead throughout and didn’t really lose any ground on the winner so ran pretty well but pretty well doesn’t seem to cut it these days.
