The Traffic is Building Up at DMR as the Trials Beckon

The DMR Trials

Well, we sit on the eve of the biggest player driven event ever staged at HRP, the DMR Trials.

Special thanks must go to the originator of the trails, Jerry Garcia Racing and all those that have come after to take up the mantle and keep this great event going. This year we see John Henry and Mb Stables as the organizers and they have managed to collect (at the time of writing), well over $1,300.000 in vouchers to be shared among those that have the fastest unraced two-year-olds on the day.

The trials are over 5 furlongs at DMR, and competitors must be ridden by the trainer and held at a breeze rather than ridden handily. Instructions are allowed and there will be those that sacrifice the last furlong for early speed and those that look at closing the work off with a fast final furlong. Generally, though I would expect most works to be HL, although with such a large pool of vouchers available players will be looking at ways to get an edge. Some will have experimented with adds, some will have gelded as they plopped out of the womb but at the end of the day with these young horses being so wildly inconsistent at this stage anything or nothing may work on the day.

The one thing that has always interested me is how fillies are generally able to work very similar times to their male counterparts. This may be down to maturity, but it has also led to several fillies being successful in open grade in the past when it is time to hit the track. They get a decent weight allowance giving the best of them a clear advantage over the boys. This advantage, however, seems to not last past the juvenile stage with any degree of consistency and certainly by the time they reach three the advantage is programmed out of them.

One thing I will finish with is this: Don’t worry if your star two-year-old ends up with the 200th fastest time. It is rare for the trails winners to win much else and whilst the prize is certainly worth winning it really has little to do with ability once these juveniles hit the track.

Good Luck to you all and see you at DMR.
