KD Turf Cup – Grade II [BC]
1 1/2 Mile Turf Stake Purse $2,000.000 Open 3 Year Olds And Up.
1st Penal Hockey Party Maxmillion Farm Jimenez A
Well, it was a year ago that this one won the AP Million and that was the last time we saw him in the winner’s circle but after 8 without a win he smelt the big prize again and won this like he didn’t know how to lose. Breaking straight into the stalk when he was asked to go for the front the race was all over, and he ended up ambling home by two very easy lengths. This horse typifies just how hard it is to find a winner in these top races. There was a point last year when he looked like he was going to go right to the BC unbeaten, but the game is a lot tougher than that and he has had to earn this win with some tough races. The question now is can he go one better in the BC as he was beaten a nose in the BC Mile last year? After this powerful display of stamina, I think we may see him in the turf this year and at his best, well he could win it!
2nd Chagrin Falls Mo Mentum Farm Gutierrez Mario
I said it was hard to pick the winner but then picking this one as the runner up was just as hard. He had gone nine races on the turf for just one win before today but then there was that 1.34- and 1-mile work and the “freak” radar went on full alert. This six-year-old has always been decent but with 5 of his 6 wins coming on the main track and nothing like the sort of form to bother these there had to be something ‘else’ for him to be a chance today. That something else was that turf work and that was enough to convince his owner to have a crack at this massive prize and credit to them as he came home well to hold second in the best race of his career.
3rd Ziccio Night Rider Stables Saez L
This has to be one of the most consistent turf routers around at the moment as he once again gave his all for a place finish. This was another solid effort from the five-year-old who continues to mix it with the best and always seems to run a great race.
4th Wayward Prince Angelos Stable Alvarado F T
Stayed on into fourth for another dour effort and though he doesn’t manage to win too often at this level he once again was right in the thick of things.
