SUN Oaks [KYO]
1 Mile Dirt Stake Purse $250.000 Filly 3 Year Olds.

It is great to see the lesser-known trainers getting success especially when it is with a horse they bred themselves. Though Winning Link Stables has been a player here since 2003 making them one of the original players, they have never run a huge stable but have enjoyed success. With only their third winner of the year they have themselves a KYO hope and the hope of a first grade one success, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves here.
This filly has now won four from seven and has never been out of the first four and as she proved in the Myrtlewood last year when she gets to the front, she can be a very hard horse to get past. It had to happen eventually, but this filly not only made the lead from the gate, but she also enjoyed a lead without any pressure and was able to dictate a fairly sedate pace through the half mile. With many of the field and more fancied horses looking for a late run she always had them in her pocket as she gently turned up the speed from halfway and they were never going to get to her on the soft splits she was able to run.
The question the trainer will be asking now is can she do it over a bit further and if she gets some pressure early on? Well, she is only getting better, and she may just be one of the dark horses leading into the KYO.

We knew this horse was going back and we knew she was going to fly home; the only question was whether the shape of the race would suit her big finishing kick. Well, as I have just said in reporting on the winner, it didn’t quite work out for her today, but she ran a super finish as always just coming up short. She had been that little bit closer in The Cash Run last time off similar splits but that probably had more to do with traffic as she faced a field of 12 to get by today and launched form fourth of seven last time. Her day will come and there is no doubt the further she goes the better she will get so I wouldn’t be writing her off for a KYO spot just yet.

As so many do here at HRP, she moved from the turf to the main track without any loss in form or performance. Taken a fair way back she flew home to share third and is another that deserves another shot at the KYO qualification after this effort. Another day and a bit earlier pace and she could well be looking at the winner’s berth.

Stalked the lead but was caught flat footed as the leader quickened off the front and, in the end, just whacked away for the share of third. After her disappointing effort in the Busanda the trainer will be happy to see her back in form and she too may have more to offer down the road.
