El Camino – Grade III [KYD]
1 1/8 Mile Dirt Stake Purse $200.000 Open 3 Year Olds.
1st Tumultous, trained by Red Square Stables
It was refreshing to see a horse whose works were so far from some of the more fancied runners show that HRP isnt always as simple as the fastest horse wins. This lightly raced homebred promised plenty in the LA Futurity when a fast finishing second but with fairly average works since he didnt get the interest he deserved in this race. Getting a good position early on he won in determined fashion in a close finish and must now be considered a real KYD hope.
2nd = Winged Feeney, trained by Four Winds Racing
Taken back from a wide draw he flew home late to dead heat for second. With zero black type form before this race but some encouraging works he must now enter the KYD picture. I wonder whether his running style will be his worst enemy, especially in the big classic fields, but this was a very promising run and his next start will tell us even more about hs progress.
2nd = Greek Life, trained by Mb Stables
In contrast to the one he dead heated with he did the ‘other’ thing a wide draw does and made the running. He was pretty game in the end and lasted longer than most on the lead from the wide gate so his trainer will take some encouragement from this effort.
4th Champsville Sweeper, trained by Axeman
He was the loser in the 4 way photo finish for this race but there seemed no excuses for his loss and i cant see any reasons apart from improvement that he can turn the form around with the first three. A good enough effort and he was clear of the rest so he isnt ut of any Derby reckoning just yet.
