8 FG FG Stakes (GIII)
$150.000 4yo&Up 1 1/8m Turf 123lbs +penalties
We go to the FG turf course for a nice group of older handicap horses and we look at the field for the FG Stakes (GIII) to be run at a mile and an eighth. I landed on Hollywood Hero as my top choice in this one. He’s won three of his last five races and has been impressive in his last two starts. That two length win at this track last out is hard to ignore. Another that looks ready to run a big race in this one is Just Chillin. That last out third vs. stakes company at GP shows me that he wants that extra eighth of a mile and he looks like a formidable foe to me. There are a few others that need to be given serious consideration and this should be a fun race to watch.
Here’s The Field –
Two wins last season including the Jersey Derby at MTH, but his last three starts really didn’t add up to much. Closed out with a fifth in the marathon Jerkens at GP the day after xmas, so he needs to turn things around to run with this bunch.
Three wins in 20 and closed out the year with a nice win in the Tropical Park Derby at GP. Kicked off 21 with a fast closing runner up effort in the Bradley Hcp here at FG. More of the same should make him a big factor today.
Closed well to be third in his final start of 20 in the Diliberto here at FG and he is a late running type. A pair of 20 victories at the Alw level, so he needs to step up to the plate in one of these black type races if he wants to get the job done.
Three wins last season and his big race was an upset 20/1 victory in the Muniz Mem Hcp (GII) here at FG. He was a close-up fourth in his 21 debut at SA, so he has the ability to be a major force in this one as well. His best may get the job done.
A solid turf season for this gelding as he took down the Shoemaker Mile (GI) to get his name in lights. He closed out his 20 season with a seventh place finish in the BC Mile (GI) only beaten two lengths… not too shabby. Give him a big look today as he should be the chalk.
Three wins last season, but he was racing against softer than what he sees here today. Shows a couple of Alw wins and was a mixed bag vs. stakes company, sixth in the Diliberto and just missed in the Kenner, both of those at this track. Who shows up today?
Four wins last season and kicked off this year with a victory… all good news. That win in the Bradley certainly was a head turner as he drew off to win that by two. He’s real consistent right now and must be a favorite in today’s race.
Four wins last year but he went on a streak there with no pictures, then got the job done last out vs sAlw horses at SA. This will be his third start of the year, so he certainly doesn’t spend any time in the stall.
Three wins last year and was third to kick-off the 21 season when he ran a fair effort at GP in the Tropical Turf (GIII) as the luke-warn 9/2 favorite. He looks like he wants a bit more distance than that last out flat mile, so this may be a good spot for him.
Hard knocking type that has a pair of wins last season including the Wise Dan (GII) at CD, but had a couple of poor efforts at KEE including BC Day, then was sixth at GP in the Ft Lauderdale. When he’s right, he can run with anyone… but…
Another that has run some big races with top notch fields including a win in the DMR Hcp (GII) back in Aug. His last three have been less than thrilling, and he sold two races back, so he’s another that needs to get it back on-track.
