3 SA San Juan Capistrano Stakes (GIII)
$100.000 3yo&Up 1 1/2m Turf 3yo 121lbs Older 124lbs +penalties
We get a full gate of twelve looking to go the marathon mile and a half distance and we look at the field for the 2020 San Juan Capistrano Stakes (GIII), to be run on Sunday over the SoCal turf at SA. We have a bit of everything here including a pair of girls taking on the boys, and a 7yo looking for his twelfth victory… already winning three of four this season. I’m going in a different direction and will give the top pick to Hefner. He’s really never gone this distance, but he looks to be wanting it in a big, bad way. He’s been close vs. graded horses, going the mile distance, and was closing in those stakes, so lets see if this is what he wants. I’ll take the rail horse Welcome To My World in the second sport, as his history spells that he likes the distance and he has seven wins from twenty starts, so he knows where the wire is and how to get a check.
Here’s The Field –

Welcome To My World Maxmillion Farm Velez J I 124 4/1 He’s been solid of late while facing a bit softer. Won a small stakes at TUP then just missed at the distance in an ALW race over this course. He has seven wins from twenty starts and he sure does like the marathon distance, so you have to give him a shot in here. |

Bayou Quartier Invicta Group Llc Prat F 124 5/1 This old boy sure isn’t done with the race horse thing, showing three wins from his last four starts as a 7yo. Won over this track and at today’s distance last out and looked good doing it. Shows eleven wins from thirty-six starts and has twelve other OTB starts, so he certainly knows his way around the oval. Give him a look. |

Just Chillin Nakamura Stables Gryder A T 124 8/1 That was an unusually bad race at PIM last out when eighth in the Dixie (GII) on PRK Day. Tough field, but he’s been better than that and it’s a red-flag race to me. I’ll watch from afar today and hope that he get’s things back on-track. |
Zero Annuity Nakamura Stables Cedillo A 124 7/1 Stable-mate to the three horse and has been more of a mile- specialist. His style usually dictates pressing the pace so it will be interesting to see the tactics here going the extra distance. Again, I think I’m going to have to watch this one from afar even though he’s usually in the mix. |

First Class Male Team 7 Illusions Fuentes Ru 124 15/1 Four races that have been a bit ugly, although he has been racing against great fields. His last win came in Sep of last season, and it was at this marathon distance. Still, he will have to reach back and find some of that old magic to be any part of today’s festivities. |

Plateau Ruckus Rock Creek Rispoli U (+1)117 20/1 Yikes! Ran off to win by nine lengths at CD on a soggy turf course in his most recent, and that made it two in a row after a string of runner up races, trying to break maiden. I’m not a fan of fillies taking on the boys, so I’ll be looking at a few others in this one. |
Speedy Ginger The Sidley Stud Desormeaux K J 119 15/1 Another filly willing to take on the boys in this one, and she’s fresh off of a stakes win at CD to get things back on the right side of the bank. Three runner-up races prior to that, all in stakes, so she certainly knows how to get it done, but again, I’m no fan of girls vs. boys. |

Momentus Mb Stables Franco G 124 6/1 The big barn brings a pair to this one and it’s been a while since he’s seen the winner’s circle. Won at SAR back in Aug of last season, and that was a split-purse on the DH, and is 0-3 this year while not hitting the board. He was closing at KEE so maybe we throw out that wet-race last out and see if he can get things going here. |
Hefner Mb Stables Gutierrez Mario 124 5/1 Another that is still looking for his first seasonal win and the second part of the Mb entry looks to be ready to run a big race. He closed well to be fourth in the Shoemaker Mile (GI) and the added distance may be something he has wanted for a while. Is this a place for him to get the job done? |
Stallsome Maxmillion Farm Pereira T J 124 12/1 He is a regular at the distance races but hasn’t shown much at this level. Just missed last out but that was a lower level Alw race at TUP, so this is a big step up and he will need his best to be any factor today although he does show a couple of nice am gallops. |
Maniaco del Controll Threshold Espinoza V 124 8/1 Nice runner-up effort last out over this track in the Whittingham (GII) and something like that could land him in the picture-booth here today. He closed out ’19 with a win a GG in a wet/dirt stakes win, so he has some class and could be a big factor here if the post doesn’t hurt him. |
Chaimagne Royalty Stables Maldonado E 124 15/1 Claimed for $16.000 last out and he’s been on a regular diet of mid-level claimers for quite a while, so the new barn goes right after the gusto and jumps into the deep end. If the class hike wasn’t enough, he gets stuffed in the twelve hole, so if he wins this, you have to take your hat off. |
