It is not very often that the term “first winner” can be used when discussing a stakes race and Mb Stables, but Twisted Express is the first winner for the barn in the G1 DMR Oaks. Prominent throughout, Twisted Express took her first G1, first graded race, and first race past 1-mile. In doing so, she proved to be the only horse that wasn’t travelling on a “double yellow line” as no one else passed a single horse in the 9-furlong G1 contest for 3yo fillies.
Amalfi broke from the second stall and took the field through an opening quarter in :23.78. D J C Racing Stables filly was tracked by Twisted Express on the rail, with that one’s stablemate, Steppin Out, in third. Castin Couch Cutie somehow found herself four wide in a five horse field and sitting fourth with Mighty Princess well back in 5th.
Not much changed through a half-mile in :47.36 and three-quarters in 1:10.53. Amalfi was still on top and the order behind her remained the same. The only change was that Twisted Express came off the rail and into the three path which caused Steppin Out and Casting Couch Cutie to move to the four and five paths, respectively.
The only pass in the race occurred as they clicked a mile in 1:33.99. Twisted Express made the front and gradually edged away from Amalfi in the final 200 yards to score by 1/2 length at the wire in 1:45.96. Steppin Out was another three lengths back in third and was followed home by Casting Couch Cutie and Mighty Princess.
Twisted Express (Carson Express o/o Twisted Love) improved to 16-3-8-1 with earnings of $456.800 and garnered 10 BC points for the G1 BC Filly & Mare Turf in November. Amalfi earned six BC points for her 2nd place finish and Steppin Out received four points for her 3rd place effort.
