Up and Comers Take Center Stage in Cinema Stakes

Cinema Stakes ($100.000 Purse)
SA- For Three Year Olds
One Mile and One Eighth on the Turf
May 23, 2021

A field of five will go to post for the fifth edition of the Cinema Stakes, and this race should serve as a good stepping stone for its winner to go on to do bigger and better things. For now, this is not a field packed with runners with glowing resumes, but is made entirely of horses hoping to get there. Therefore, it might not look like more than a high level allowance here at SA, but there is nothing wrong with that. This was not the case last year, when Winchester took home the trophy, as he was coming off a second place run in the Peter Pan. That gelding certainly has gone to have a good career, and that is what our trainers are hoping for now. Here’s the field!

#1- Broad Brush (Mb Stables, ridden by Ru Gonzalez)- Raced here last month in an allowance for CA breds, and went wire to wire for his second career win. If he duplicates that effort again here, then he has a great chance to win and is probably the one to beat. In six starts, he has never been out of the top four. Plenty to like here.

#2- Elusive Quality (Robeth, ridden by J J Hernandez)- Finally broke his maiden in his last start, his seventh, on the dirt at PRX. He had run on the grass in his three prior starts, however. Adds have bounced around on this one, but perhaps now the trainer has found that perfect combination. A little surprised he did not stay on the main track, though.

#3- Hey Bud (Rampage Stable, ridden by F Prat)- The only horse in the field that has been running in stakes with any regularity, but he has not won any of them. In fact, his last four starts show a noteworthy pattern of good start followed by bad start. At least for the trainer, the next race should be a positive one.

#4- Sevens Vb (La Canada Racehorses, ridden by Mario Gutierrez)- Comes into this race out of the $100.000 Woodhaven at AQU, a race in which he finished second. It was his first time in a stake, and it was an impressive 93 SRF effort. Overall, he’s won three of five, so he knows how to get it done. This race looks like it comes down to him and Broad Brush, I like him in a photo.

#5- Decimated (South Shore Stables, ridden by A Cedillo)- After being picked up in private sales for $20.000 in February, this one is finally going to make his debut for the new trainer. This tells me that South Shore Stables has taken the time to get him right, and that makes me intrigued by him here as this is his first turf race and second time going long. Has a couple tough foes to take on, but he may end up right there with them at the wire.

Prediction: 4-1-5-3
