Upset Is The Word For King Glorious Stakes

12/20/20

  2   LA    King Glorious Stakes
    $100.000      2yo Foaled In CA          1m  Dirt              120lbs +penalties

Crazy I was… the tote board was lit up in Sunday’s King Glorious Stakes as 26/1 Dutty John Crow, owned by Night Rider Stables, got home by a half length in a final time of 1:351 for the flat mile here at LA.  No reason to stop there as 12/1 shot Forever Boom grabbed the second spot, a quarter length in front of Poor Spaniard, with 46/1 Big Bad Steps a length back in fourth.

The field of ten got away from the gate and made the short run to the clubhouse turn with Poor Spaniard on the early lead, Cotton Hill next to that one, down to the rail for Residue Rain, then to the extreme outside for Greatest Game.  Quest For Success on his inside, then Forever Boom, Big Bad Steps and Dutty John Crow, then towards the outside for Freak A Leak and Carpe Donktum was the early trailer.

Moving around the far turn and onto the backside with six furlongs to run and Greatest Game skipped off to a two length lead.  Poor Spaniard giving chase, Quest For Success next to that one, then the trio of Forever Boom between horses, Cotton Hill on his outside, Residue Rain on the rail, then another two lengths back to Dutty John Crow skimming the paint, Freak A Leak three wide and Big Bad Steps between that pair, as Carpe Donktum continued to be the back marker.

The field made the run down the backside and Greatest Game had skipped off to a two and a half length advantage.  A group of four were chasing that one with Quest For Success four wide, Forever Boom in the two path, Poor Spaniard on the rail and Cotton Hill in the three path.  Another length and a half back to Residue Rain, Big Bad Steps between horses and Freak A Leak three wide, Dutty John Crow in behind that trio and Carpe Donktum continued to trail.

Now moving around the far turn and to the top of the lane, they flew past the three-sixteenths pole and we had a horse race on our hands… five across the track as Greatest Game was covered up from both the inside and out… the lead was now a nose as Forever Boom was looking him in the eye, Poor Spaniard up on the rail, Forever Boom moving up quickly to mount a charge, Cotton Hill outside of that one and Quest For Success down the far outside.  Behind that was was the trio of Residue Rain on the inside of Dutty John Crow, Big Bad Steps on the outside of that group, then a gap back to Freak A Leak and Carpe Donktum.

Deep stretch and to the finish, Forever Boom with the lead, Poor Spaniard from the rail and nose-n-nose with the leader, and Dutty John Crow found a spot on the outside and was now closing fastest of all… and as the moved through the final 150-yards and to the finish, Dutty John Crow was determined to get the job done and went under the wire in front by a half length to take the win.  Forever Boom continued on well for the place, Poor Spaniard from the rail grabbing third and Big Bad Steps in fourth.  Residue Rain was fifth, Cotton Hill sixth, Quest For Success seventh, Greatest Game tiring to be eighth, Cape Donktum ninth and Freak A Leak closed this one out.

Dutty John Crow is a 2yo bay gelded son of Dial It In – Sweet Iron, by Iron Kaki, and he was bred in Cal by his owner, Night Rider Stables.  This was his second win from three starts and he now has earnings of $82.000
