    Greenwood Cup (GIII)
$200.000   3yo&Up      1  1/2m    Dirt
Another Labor Day stakes, another well paying winner.  Sent off as the second longest shot on the board at almost 11/1, Maxmillion Farm’s Vegas Viper broker his maiden last out and came right back to put black-type next to his name, taking the Greenwood Cup (GIII) by two lengths in a final running time of 2:29.13 for the marathon mile and a half distance.  King Ring was second, three lengths in front of Elusive Image, making a healthy $396.00 trifecta. The field of seven were off with King Ring away well, Fatal Dream next to that one and Xmas Diamond and Elusive Image towards the inside.  Victory Meal on the far outside, Joie de Bleu and Vegas Viper was the early trailer.

Around the far turn and under the wire the first time by, a mile to run and Fatal Dream was showing the way by a length and a half.  King Ring giving chase, Elusive Image another length back along the rail and Xmas Diamond on the flank.  A gap of three back to Joie de Bleu, two more to Victory Meal and Vegas Viper under a hold at the rear, nine lengths from the leader.

They made their way around the clubhouse turn and onto the back-side with five and a half furlongs to run, Fatal Dream still in front by three-quarters of a length, King Ring starting to press the issue and Elusive Image off of the rail and up to put some pressure on.  Xmas Diamond just in behind that trio and four wide, Joie de Bleu a length and a half back and hugging the rail.  Three more lengths back Vegas Viper along the inside and Victory Meal was now the trailer, eight lengths covered the field.

Down the backside and into the far turn, three furlongs to run and King Ring moved up to take the lead by a length and a half.  Elusive Image now in second, a length back to Xmas Diamond, then the trio of Fatal Dream on the fail, Joie de Bleu between horses, Vegas Viper four wide and Victory Meal trailing, eight lengths from the leader.

Swing around the far turn to the top of the lane and this one was changing complexion in quick order…  King Ring still in front by a length and a half but Vegas Viper swung 5 wide and was closing down the center of the track like a freight train.  Elusive Image still trying to keep pace, Xmas Diamond in striking position Joie de Bleu between that pair and a clear shot.  Gap of two back to Victory Meal and and another length to Fatal Dream, both looked out of it.

Inside the final 150-yards to to the finish, Vegas Viper went right on by and was extending the lead when he went under the wire, two lengths clear.  King Ring was second best in this one, three lengths in front of Elusive Image.  Joie de Bleu was fourth, Xmas Diamond in fifth, Victory Meal in sixth and Fatal Dream closed this one out.

Vegas Viper is a 3yo gelded son of Danzig Lover – Las Vegas Misery, by Las Vegas Fifty One and he was bred in Cal by Riggins Racing.  Acquired through private purchase for $50.000, it seems that gelding this guy was the right call – he’s undefeated since the vet came by, now showing two wins from six starts and $199.400 in earnings.
