After her dominant three-year-old season that saw her win both the KYO and the BC Distaff, among others, Wasted Away returned to the racetrack after some well-deserved time off to make her four-year-old racing debut. This filly by Fire N Fury had not been wasting away over the last four months and successfully took care of business in the Beholder Mile just like we are used to her doing. She was heavy post time favorite, and our pick, as there was no reason to doubt her in this race unless you were concerned about the layoff. The win is the fourth in this race for her trainer, Mb Stables, with his previous wins coming in 2014 (Stella Artois), 2016 (Brawl Dead End), and 2023 (Retrospect). The winning rider is T Gaffalione, his second such win, and they have come in consecutive years. Wasted Away’s winning race time was 1:34.80, and that is a new stake record for this distance. Let’s take a look at it now:

(1/4 Mile- :22.99)- Threshold’s Moment To Reflect breaks well out of the gate, and so to does the TwinTowersRacing’s Groovy. These will be the early leaders, with Moment To Reflect having a half-length edge. There are three stalkers right behind them, with Devil In High Heels running third while riding the rail for the The Sidley Stud and Arindel’s Foxy Envoy is next between horses. Wasted Away, our eventual winner from Mb Stables, is comfortable in the third lane here with plenty of room right in front of her. It’s another length to her stablemate Secret Of A Lady, and the trailer is Spb Racing’s Military Made.

(½ Mile- :46.50)- Moment To Reflect pulls away from Groovy as she heads down the backstretch and is clear by a length after half a mile. Right behind these two, Foxy Envoy and Wasted Away run evenly for the third position while Devil In High Heels loses some ground to those two. There’s a break of two to Secret Of A Lady, and another to Military Made.

(Top of Stretch, 1.7F To Go)- Out in front, Moment To Reflect continues to lead the way and hopes to pull off the upset here, but Threshold was surely concerned about the methodical way in which Wasted Away was inching closer. At the top of the turn, T Gaffalione maintained his filly’s position and she would ultimately work her away past Groovy before entering the stretch. Foxy Envoy, who matched strides with Wasted Away in the backstretch, was unable to keep that up, but still had a shot here in the fourth position. Devil In High Heels lacked response while Secret Of A Lady and Military Made looked to make runs that seemed to be too late in the making, given who they were chasing.

(Finish- 1:34.80)- Wasted Away is a champion who has won big races, and she hadn’t forgotten how to get it done with the time off she had. Moment To Reflect did everything right in the stretch, she simply had to beat the best in her division and could not quite do so. Wasted Away’s four-year-old debut is a success, winning by a length and a half over a game Moment To Reflect, and it’s another length to the third place Foxy Envoy. Secret Of A Lady beats fellow late runner Military Made for fourth, followed by Groovy and Devil In High Heels.

About The Winner- Wasted Away, trained by Mb Stables and ridden to victory by T Gaffalione, is a four-year-old filly by Fire N Fury and is out of Calescent. She was bred in Florida by Luz International as a third quarter two-year-old and was acquired by Mb Stables, via Fractious, for $1,250.000 in a July 2024 private sale. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her seventh in 12 starts, her sixth stake win and fifth graded win. All of the graded wins are Grade 1’s. Her career earnings are now $3,449.000.
